The EX260 is ESP's take on the classic rock 'n' roll guitar, the Explorer. With a few extra curves, angular headstock and quality hardware, this guitar has much to offer.
The angular headstock seems to match the angles of the body and neck, kind of pointing the way somewhere. With 6-a-side black Nickle ESP tuners keeping pitch perfectly, and an 'LTD' logo shining out against the gloss black paint job.
The neck is nice and slim, aiding fast fretwork, with a gloss black finish to the rear. The unbound Rosewood fretboard has large white position markers, and ESP's trademark 12th fret Abolone block marker, displaying the guitar model number. The superb fretwork is evident on this guitar as well as across the ESP range, lovely smooth Rosewood and perfectly finished frets.
The neck is set in, and joins the body at the 19th fret on both the bass and treble sides. The bass side has a straphook nearby on the body edge, nicely positioned for a good balance when played standing up.
The cutaway on the treble side has a bit of extra chamfering, giving some improved access to the upper frets. The cutaway sweeps away to a sharp point, be careful with that, matching the angles of the upper body, nice sweeping curves unlike the normal straight lines found on a Gibson for example.
The body is totally gloss black, unbound, and has some beveling on the front, around the upper point and bottom sides, but no extra chamfering. The guitar feels fairly light, given it's a fairly large chunk of wood.
The EMG pickups are clearly designed to look like the famous EMG's used on their more expensive guitars, but these are every bit as good, with a large tonal range, and in combination with the coil tap, can give some great jingly jangle pop tones.
But they come into their own on a high gain setting, with loads of power, grunt and sustain that will please any metal gods out there.
The hardware is all finished in cool black Nickle, with a tune-o-matic style bridge and tailpiece, and single volume and tone controls, which also has a push/pull coil tap.
A seriously good Explorer style guitar, for a great price, with quality hardware, a great neck and fretboard and plenty of metal power and poise. Well worth looking into if you're after this style of instrument.
