Ultra cool and eye catching styling feature on Michael Schenkers Flying V from Dean, with a whire upper half, and contrasting black lower, the ex Scorpions guitarist has a great range of Signature guitars.
But as well as the styling, the Schenker Standard also has decent pickups, a nice playing fretboard and quality hardware.
The headstock is Deans traditional oversized V shape, with the Dean wings logo, this matches the rest of the body, with one half black, one half white. The Michael Schenker logo is also on the front, whilst the rear also features the same paint job, which also runs down the back of the neck. The tuners are Grovers, not bad on a guitar of this price, in chrome, and a 3 a side configuration.
The neck feels fairly slim, with a flatish D profile and easy playing style. The Rosewood fretboard is unbound, with decent frets, nicely finished, and a good quality Rosewood has been used, nice tight grain and plenty dark, a good sign. Small white pearl dots mark the usual fret numbers.
The Maple neck is bolted onto the body, joining at the 21st fret, and clearly no problem getting upper access to all 22 frets! The neck join is pretty big and chunky, aiding resonance through the body, with a chrome plate on the back, nicely engraved with a Dean logo, and a built in chrome straphook on one of the bolts.
At first sight, this looks a pretty big guitar, but the Basswood body is actually pretty light, so no problems there is you're not too big yourself! Apart from the fantastic paint job, the front also features a V shaped chrome plate underneath the bridge, protecting the body where the strings pass through, and a large chrome disc around the jack socket, towards the tip of the lower point. All nice finishing touches.
The Schenker Standard has 2 humbuckers, uncovered, in black and a chrome tune-o-matic bridge. The Basswood body, together with the string thru, produces a lot of volume. Played acoustically, the tone is really deep and woody, with plenty of bass on offer. This transfers to the amplified sound as well, with pleasing clean chords and loads of power for your overdrive channel, all controled by 2 volumes, 1 tone and a 3 way selector switch.
A nice playing guitar with a great look that will certainly catch the eye. very good value at little over £200.
