Top - Select Spruce, Celluliod Rosette Back/Sides - Mahogany, Celluliod bound Neck - Mahagany Fingerboard - Rosewood, Pearl Dot Inlays Scale - 25.5" Machines - Sealed Die-Cast Tuners Bridge - Rosewood
If you're after a decent, colourful acoustic guitar, and really want a hardcase to carry it around safely in, then the Dean AK48 is just what you need.
With a Spruce top, Mahogany body and neck, plenty of sparkly sounds and some bright finishes, this dreadnaught is a mighty fine guitar to learn on or upgrade to. The hardcase has a strong wooden shell, covered in a thick vinyl plastic outer with quality catches and a smart metal Dean badge fixed to the outside.
The AK48 has a large, curvy headstock, not surprising given Dean's affection for rock guitars. Finished in the same colour as the guitar, so we have black, blue, red, and the natural has a dark brown Mahogany colour. The front also has the Dean signature logo, as well as their familiar 'wings' logo around the top, both in silver.
The rear of the headstock is the same colour, pretty much plain, apart from the 2 rows of maachine heads, they're Chrome, die-cast style, unbranded and work prefectly well.
The Mahogany neck is also the same colour as the body, the entire guitar is wood stained, then heavily varnished. The neck is a broad D profile, so not particularly fat, but not slim. It feels pretty sturdy though and has a Rosewood fingerboard nicely bound in black plastic, with large white Pearloid dot inlays.
The fretwork on the 'board is good, all nicely finished off, no rough edges to report, and it all makes for quite an enjoyable guitar to play. Nut width on the AK48 is 43mm, and it has a lovely low action, 3mm on the bass side and 2mm on the treble at the 12th fret.
The Mahogany body is fully bound in black to the front and back. The gloss paint job shows off the grain of the wood below very well, the top of the AK48 is Select Spruce.
The soundhold has a simply decorated rosette of 3 individual circles, whilst the attractive Rosewood bridge has a kind os 'swish' look, not very traditional, but certianly different!
The sounds are very good, plenty of volume and bright, characterful tone. Strumming chords is fun with booming clarity, whilst finger pickers will also get along well with the easy playing simplicity of this guitar.
A pretty good offering from a well respected American guitar manufactuer, good value with the case included, nice sounds and playability and definately some different looks to your standard dreadnaught!
