Peaveys Generation EX Custom is their top of the range Tele shape, and a cracking guitar it is too. Loads of nice finishing touches, quality hardware and Peaveys ACM Analogue Acoustic Modeling Bridge, replicating an acoustic guitars resonance and tone through a patented analog process.
The EX Custom has a slim, sleek headstock, gloss black to the front with Peaveys logo in silver. A single, roller style string tree keeps pressure on the 2 treble strings. To the rear is a satin finished Maple neck, this model having 6 in-line Chrome Grover Mini-Rotomatic machine heads with small buttons.
The neck is quite slim, a D profile, top nut width is 43mm. The neck has a satin finish to the Birds-Eye Maple, a lovely grain running down it.
The fretboard is Rosewood, unbound, and it's really very good, well polished up with a nice, waxy feel. Fretwork is also to a high standard, no rough edges and all well polished up. The board has no position markers on the top, but Peavey have been good enough to pop some on the upper side of the neck, much to my releif!
The Maple neck is bolted onto Alder body, joining at the 16th fret on the bass side, and 20th on the treble, and the cutaway here gives good access to all 22 frets. The back of the neck joint has no neck plate, but 5, recessed black screws holding it all together.
The Alder body is fully bound to the top and back in creamy white plastic, giving a bit of a posh look here! The back is flat, no chamfering needed, with a battery compartment and large black plastic cover for accessing the back of the controls. Also, there a 6 holes for the strings to go through.
The front of the body has a large, 3 ply black scratchplate. There is a regular 5 way selector switch, a master volume and 2 tones. Also, notice the small 3 way selector down there that operates the ACM technology.
All of these pickups are active, although they will work passively if you remove the battery, but otherwise they're pretty powerful with plenty of biting treble, clear and responsive with a good, broad tonal rangel.
Activating the acoustic modelling gives loads of extra brightness and sparkle, this guitar is great if you're into a mix of music, fingerpicking on this setting is great, and all round jangley chords.
On your regular settings, just what you'd expect really, the neck is warm, plenty of bluesy bass response, the bridge much edgier with more zing and balance.
In all, Peavey come up trumps here, a great looking guitar, quality hardware, great pickups, the ACM technology is superb, and just a really good, versatile all rounder. And at less than £250, a bargain!
