With more than a passing resemblance to Gibsons SG, ESP's Viper has that aggressive double cut look, with powerful humbuckers, black Nickel hardware and superb playability.
The Viper 50 has a curvy headstock, gloss black to the front and back, with the Ltd logo in silver. The back has ESPs logo and the serial number, and 2 rows of 3 a side black Nickel ESP branded tuners with small tuning
buttons.
The Maple neck is also black gloss, pretty slim, ESP call it a thin U, but we think it's more of a D profile. Top nut width is 42mm.
The 24 fret Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, with small white dot inlays, and ESP's traditional 12th fret block marker in Abolone, displaying the model number. Fretwork is excellent, as on all of the ESP guitars we've seen, and sold, and bought, and the board is well polished with a nice waxy feel. Action height at the 12th fret from the factory here is between 2 and 3mm across the board.
The neck is bolted onto the Basswood body, joining at the 20th fret on the bass side, and 22nd on the treble. The cutaways on both sides have extra chamfering, so upper fret access is not a problem.
The chamfering continues around both the front and back of the black glossy body, giving a nice bevelled look. This hasn't taken much weight away though, it's a pretty heavy guitar.
The pickups are ESP's own LH-150 open coil humbuckers, and they're plenty powerful, with loads of tonal range and sound great on your dirty channel. Very impressive for their entry level guitars.
The tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece are finished in the very attractive black Nickel as well, so are the master tone and volume controls, all giving a very cool look.
A very nice gutiar for less than £200, you'll struggle to get a better one for this money. The pickups are great, the neck is very playable, quality hardware, cool looks and a great brand name on the headstock.
