The AX54 is a mean loooking bass guitar from ESP with plenty of poise, purpose and attitude! Big and heavy with an all over satin black finish, plenty of points and a powerful, active pickup system to produce driving bass lines, perfect for rock and metal music.
The AX54 has a nicely shaped headstock, with 2 a side black chrome ESP tuners, these are of a good quality and keep pitch without flaw, no matter how much abuse is dished out. The gold, blocky 'LTD' logo shines out on the front of the headstock, otherwise it's plain satin black to the front and rear.
The neck is fairly chunky, 39mm at the nut. Finished in satin black to the rear, the neck is great for fast and light fingered fretting, and if you've got small or large hands, you'll find the it's very nice to play.
The 24 fret Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, with neat and tidy fretwork and a good, tight grain. Small dot's provide the position markers, with ESP's traditional block 12th fret inlay, displaying the model number.
The neck is bolted onto the glossy black body by 4 recessed black chrome screws.
The body is an X shaped double cutaway, with excellent access to all 24 extra jumbo frets, and some nice chamfering making things at the top easier. The chamfering continues around the front and back edges of the body, giving a more comfortable playing position and improving looks, giving it a kind of bevelled, stand out shape.
The straphooks are found on the back of the top upper bout, and on the edge of the lower top bout, again giving good balance and a decent playing position when stood up, you don't want to play this sitting down!
The bridge and 2 control knobs are all in matching chrome, all good quality stuff. The pickup is EMG's own SB-4, with active circuitry so you have more control over the tonal response.
The guitar is capable of a broad range of sounds, not just metal mayhem, the pickup system can give subtle jazzy and funk tones through to powerful driving rock lines.
A suprisingly versailte bass guitar with great looks, quality sounds and plenty of playability. More good stuff from ESP guitars.
