Body - Basswood Neck - Maple Fingerboard - Rosewood, dot inlays, 22 frets Hardware - Black Bridge - Tune-o-Matic Tuners - sealed, die-cast Pickups - 2 * Dean Humbuckers Controls - 1*volume, 1*tone, 3-way selector
The Evo is Deans range of LP style single cutaway electric guitars, and this version, the XM, is the entry level model.
It offers pretty good value for money at not much more than £100 as well, everything works well enough, it looks good, sounds OK and plays nicely.
The headstock is large, as they are on all Dean guitars, it's squarish with tapered in sides and a little notch out of the top. Matt black to the front, with Deans signature logo, and the Wings logo on the black truss rod cover, both in silver.
The back is plain Satin Maple, with a serial number stamped on and 2 rows of black machine heads that work adequately well.
The neck is Maple, with a satin natural finish to the back, it feels good and smooth with a fairly chunky C profile.
The 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, with dot position markers and very reasonable fretwork, all nice and smooth and polished. The board itself is also not bad, the grain is tight and it's nicely polished up, giving a nice playing feel all over.
Top nut width is only 41mm, and the action, height of the strings, at the 12th fret is about 3-4mm, so in all, it's nicely set up and very playable.
The neck is bolted onto the heavy Basswood body, joining at the 16th fret on the bass side, and 20th on the treble, and with the deep cutaway here, access to all 22 frets is easy.
The body has an all over satin finish, Matt black or the natural Mahogany. The guitar is fairly plain, there is no binding or a scratchplate.
The pickups are Dean designed humbuckers, open coil style with black surrounds. They're pretty versatile as well, with both the neck and bridge pickups able to give a pleasing array of clean and distorted tones, certainly good for a budget guitar and excellent for a first guitar.
The tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece are in black, and the Evo XM has master volume and master tone controls, also in black and a 3 way pickup selector switch.
If you're on a budget and after a cheap LP style single cutaway guitar, then you should consider the Evo XM, for not much more than £100 you're getting a perfectly playable guitar with good enough pickups, a decent neck and plenty of rock looks.
