Adam Black have produced a great semi acoustic '335' style guitar in the Hydra, with Mod looks, an Ebony fingerboard and ASBO pickups, this is a guitar that has plenty of presence and will get you noticed on stage!
The slim, pointed headstock has a glossy, bright white face, with the small Adam Black logo in silver, the face is also bound in cream plastic, with the back in black, also gloss, pretty much plain with 2 rows of black Nickel tuners, slightly offset to give a bit more tension to the bass side.
The Maple neck is also gloss black, fairly slim, a nice D profile, good for a bit of fast freting. The superb Ebony fingerboard also helps a lot here, a real difference to Rosewood. The board is also fully bound in cream plastic, and has no position markers, apart from 2 at the 12th fret, offset to the bass side.
Fretwork overall is good, nicely polished up, and the board if great for fast runs, soloing and bending is a dream, the very hard wood has an extremely tight grain.
Nut width is 43mm and action as supplied from the Indonesian factory is between 2 and 3mm across the board at the 12th fret.
The neck joins the Maple body at the 19th fret on both sides, and the familiar double cutaway body shape gives good access to all 22 frets. The back of the heel joint here has the second strap button.
The black and white glossy body is fully bound to the top and back in cream plastic, giving a very smart overall appearance. The top has Adam Black's White stripe, a feature of this, their new ASBO range of electric guitars. Not raised on this model, but still very eyecatching.
The 2 'f' holes on the front are also protected by a thin layer of cream plastic, and we also have a black Nickel tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece.
The 2 ASBO pickups are black, open coil types, a real plus for this range as well as they are very powerful, giving a nice broad tonal range, great for power pop and country jangle through to blues and rock.
In all, a very well made, versatile semi acoustic with great looks, excellent pickups and hardware and plenty of retro vibe.
