Body - Maple Top - Arched Top Neck - Maple, set neck Fingerboard - Rosewood, block inlays, 22 frets Hardware - Chrome Bridge - Rosewood Bridge and covered tailpiece Pickups - 1 * Mini Humbuckers Controls - 1*volume, 1*tone
Tokai's take on Gibson's famous L5, the JS70 is a deep bodied Jazz guitar, finished in a Brown Sunburst, with a single mini humbucker at the neck, Rosewood bridge and Chrome trapeze style tailpiece.
With a hollow Maple body, this is one bright and jangley guitar, great for Jazz, country and pickers everywhere.
We'll start at the top, the headstock has a black face, bound in cream plastic, with Tokai's signature logo in white Abolone. The rear is dark brown, with the guitars serial number, and 2 symetrical rows of Wilkinson die-cast Chrome stepped style tuners, that work very precisely.
Passing over the cream top nut, width 42mm, the Maple neck is slim, a shallow D profile, the rear has a gloss paint finish over a bright burst of orange, very nice.
The Rosewood fingerboard has a fairly light colour, with a decent tight grain, and is well polished up giving a nice and waxy feel. It's bound up either side in cream plastic, protecting the well dressed and polished frets. Large white Abolone block markers start at the first fret.
String height from the factory at the 12th fret is 3mm on the bass side, 2mm at the treble.
The set neck joins the Maple body at the 14th fret on the bass side, and 17th on the treble, the cutaway here giving access to all 21 frets.
The top is fully bound in 5 ply black and cream plastic, the 2 'f' holes in cream as well. A very attractive brown sunburst adorns the front of the JS70, with a large black 3 ply scratchplate and 2 amber speed knobs for volume and tone.
The bridge is Rosewood, all fully adjustable with 2 thumbwheels for bringing the Rosewood saddle up and down on either side, and the whole lot can be moved backward or forwards for intonation purposes.
A single Chrome mini-humbucker is positioned at the end of the neck, with a black plastic surround.
The tailpiece is a Chrome trapezium style, where the strings go through one end, the other end is secured by the straphook.
The sides of the guitar also have a nice sunburst effect, the gently bowled back, which is also bound in 5 ply black and cream, likewise.
Played acoustically, the sounds are very bright, with plenty of top end treble for characterful sweet tones. There is good sustain and good clarity when plugged in too, it's a proper Jazz guitar, with Jazz sounds, great for upper end jangle and rhythm work.
A good value Jazzer from Tokai who have an excellent reputation in this market.
