Almost unbeleivable value for money here from Lag, this great small bodied Baby Jumbo electro acoustic plays beautifully, looks amazing and sounds as sweet as a nut!
With a Spruce top, Mahogany body, satin finish and quality SudioLag by Shadow pickup, specs are good, and at under £200, really worth considering if you're after a budget electro acoustic.
The Lag Spring Series Baby Jumbo 4S100BCE, to give it it's full title, has a small, tapered headstock. Its nicely faced in dark Mahogany showing a good grain, with Maple binding around the edges. The rear has 2 rows of 3 a side die cast Chrome tuners with creamy white buttons, made by Lag, they have a nice engraved cross motif on the back.
The Nato neck is quite slim and easy to manage, with a satin finish, giving a good smooth surface for moving around the neck. The nut is Tusq, aiding a strong sound, and is 43mm wide. The Indonesian Rosewood fingerboard has no position markers, but dots are present on the upper edge for you. The fingerboard is also fully bound in Maple, a nice touch on a sub £200 instrument.
Action as supplied from thr factory at the 12th fret is approximately 3mm on the treble side, 4mm on the bass.
The neck joins the satin finished Mahogany body at the 14th fret on the bass side, and 17th on the treble, so good access to the upper reaches here.
The whole body looks clean, bright and airy, they've gone for a Spring feel here, the Spruce top has a golden glow, and the Mahogany for the back and sides is a golden brown colour.
Fully bound to the top and back in Maple, the top in 4 ply Maple and Mahogany pin stripes, and with a beautiful wooden mosaic soundhole rosette, the Spring Series Baby Jumbo is a very attractive looking instrument.
Lag have called this a Baby Jumbo, but the body is far from big, the body depth is just 95mm at its deepest, and 370mm at its widest, so very comfortable to play and a good choice for younger players, girls or ladies.
Thsii model is fitted with a StudioLag pickup system, made by Shadow, which has a master volume control and 5 pre set sound positions. These go from bright and clear to more mellow sounds, a decent spread that should prove versatile enough for most situations.
Overall, the guitar plays very nicely and is fum to strum away on. It's bright and cheerful, plenty of clarity across the range and versatile enough for most styles of music. Plugged in, whilst not the most powerful pickup, the preset positions are all good and give a decent representation of the guitars acoustics.
For under £200, this guitar offers a lot, it's well built with quality materials, looks great, sounds great and plays very nicely.
