Top - Solid Red Cedar Body - Indonesian Rosewood Binding - Mahogany, Maple and Rosewood Rosette - 'Precious Woods' Autumn Design Neck - Mahogany Finish - Satin Fingerboard - Indonesian Rosewood, Maple binding Machines - Lag Hi-Precision with Ivorine Buttons Bridge - Indonesian Rosewood, Tusq saddle (& nut)
From Lag's Autumn collection, this beautiful full sized dreadnaught plays superbly and sounds wonderful, with lots of warm, mellow tones on offer.
The Autumn collection features a solid Red Cedar top, Indonesian Rosewood body, fingerboard and bridge, Mahogany neck and an all over satin finish.
The headstock of the Lag Autumn dreadnaught is fairly small, tapering inwards away from the body. It has a satin finish, the front is faced with a dark Rosewood, with light Maple binding and the Lag logo inlaid in Maple. Looking very good so far.
The back of the headstock is plain satin Mahogany, a light golden colour, with 2 rows of 3 a side Lag branded enclosed die-cast machine heads which have antique looking creamy white buttons.
The Mahogany neck also has a satin finish, it's a fairly slim one, a D profile, nut width is 44mm. The fingerboard is a very dark Indonesian Rosewood, with a very tight grain and no position markers, although they have put small black dots on the upper edge of the neck so you can see where you are.
The fretwork is all good, pretty smooth, and action as supplied from the factory is low at about 4mm across the range at the 12th fret.
The neck joins the Rosewood body at the 14th fret on both sides, and Lag have been good enough to put a strap button on the treble side of the heel joint.
The back and sides of the Lag Autumn series if Rosewood, very dark, showing an attracive, stripey grain. The back has a thin centre join line of Maple and mahogany, and is also bound in Maple.
The top is solid Red Cedar, displaying a very nice grain, with a golden colour. The top is bound in a 5 ply mix of Maple, Rosewood and Mahogany, very nicely done, as is the intricate soundhole rosette, very pretty with loads of 'Precious Woods', Mahogany, Rosewood and Maple, and the Autumn design leaf.
The large body on dreadnaughts gives plenty of volume, and this one is no different. But the Rosewood and Cedar combination is very different to Spruce and Mahogany. The Lag Autumn dreadnaught has lots of smooth, mellow sounding tones. Bass tones are rich and vibrant, without dominating the clear-toned high-end.
A great guitar for strummers, chords sound big and bright with good depth. Fingerpickers will also appreciate the excellent clarity the Cedar top and Rosewood body gives. A great all-round dreadnaught that will improve over time, and at not much more than £200, a great price.
