The VRS range is Vintages take on the ever popular PRS double cutaway body shape, here available with either a tremolo bridge, or a wrap around style stop tailpiece.
With gold Wilkinson hardware, tuners, pickups and bridge, specs are pretty good, and at under £200, they represent very good value for money. Vintage have an excellent and growing reputation in the budged guitar market, and this is a good example of that quality.
The VRS100 has a small, compact, tapered headstock. Gloss black to the front and rear, the front has 5 ply cream binding, a black truss rod cover and a small Vintage logo on top in green and purple Abolone.
The back of the headstock is pretty plain, not much room for anything else apart from the 3-a-side Wilkinson EZ Lock machine heads which have small rounded buttons. The EZ Lock posts have 2 holes, so posting the string through both will increase the hold on the string.
The Maple neck is also gloss black, as is the whole guitar, and it's a fairly chunky handful, a D profile. Nut width is a generous 44mm, and action as supplied from the factory is low at about 3mm on the bass side, 2mm on the treble at the 12th fret. Nicely set up.
The 24 fret fingerboard is Rosewood with silver Nickle frets, at it's all very well appointed, the wood is well polished up and smooth, frets are also very tidy, no roughness or grinding, quite a nice playing guitar. Cream binding continues up both sides of the board, and there are large green and purple Abolone dots mark the usual places, with Vintages double V 12th fret marker.
The set neck joins the body at the 21st fret on both sides, and there are no upper fret access problems here. The heel joint is also pretty small, making things a bit more comfortable up there.
The back of the body is pretty much flat, but there is a lot of chamfering on the upper bout here, making the guitar fit snugly into your body whilst being played.
The front has more 5 ply cream binding around the edges, and a nicely carved top rising into the centre of the body, aiding the tone and sustain of the guitar.
We have 2 black speed knobs for master tone and volume, and a gold Wilkinson bridge, either a fairly chunky looking tremolo bridge with 6 individually adjustable cast saddles, or an even chunkier wrap around style bridge.
The Wilkinson pickups have black surrounds fitted, and they're plenty powerful enough for all music styles from pop and jazz to rock and metal. The neck pickup is warm and mellow, whilst the bridge pickup is much cleaner and brighter - great for all round lead work.
A good value all round electric guitar from Vintage with quality hardware and pickups, a decent neck and fingerboard and plenty of value for your money!
