Washburns 'Idol' electric guitar range has been in production for a while now, and this is their entry level model, the WI100.
It still features many specifications found on the more expensive models, Washburns VCC (Voice Contour Control), a Mahogany body, Egnater pikcups made by Randall, Grover tuners and the Buzz Feiten tuning system. All good stuff on a sub £200 guitar.
There are 2 versions at Guitarbitz, the Carbon model is satin black, whilst I'll talk here about the Metallic Grey version.
The headstock is pretty plain and simple, black gloss to the front with a 2 ply truss rod cover indicating the model number, and Washburns logo in white script at the top.
The back has a satin natural Maple finish, with the serial number and Buzz Feiten logo in black. This is a tuning stability system used by Washburn, amongst others, that uses specially designed components on the guitar to improve intonation and tuning stability, it works very well too.
The tuners are Grovers, the industries best, with an 18:1 gear ratio, finished in satin black.
The neck is Maple, and has a very smooth satin finish to the back. Nut width is 43mm, it's quite a slim feeling neck, a shallow D profile.
The Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, and has large white dot position markers. It's quite a nice and easy playing finish, well polished up, good fretwork, no grinding when bending strings - all making for an easy playing guitar.
The bolt on neck joins the Mahogany body at the 17th fret on the bass side, and the 19th on the treble side, the cutaway here is not overly deep, but it has some chamfering there to make getting high up the neck a little easier.
The body shape we think is a cross between an SG and a Les Paul, and it looks pretty cool. The top has chamfering on the upper bout, making strumming more comfortable, and around the back here more chamfering where the guitar is going to be held against your body.
The front of the WI100 has 4 control knobs, 1 volume and 1 tone for each of the pickups, a 3 way pickup selector switch and satin black tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece.
The Randall Egnater pickups are excellent. Plenty of brightness and power, and along with the VCC, which lets you turn each from a humbucker to a brighter single coil and all sounds inbetween, you can get a very broad range of tones, great for all styles of music. On the dirty channel, driving rhythm lines or screaming solos are easily defined using the tone controls.
In all, the WI100 has to be one of our best sub £200 electric guitars. The specs and features are top quality, it plays very nicely and offers remarkable value for money.
