Probably Deans most famous guitar, apart from the many Dimebag models, the Soltero is a classic single cutaway model with twin humbuckers, a full thickness Maple cap and Mohagany body.
With Deans own rock take on things, as you may expect, the Soltero has plenty of attitude and vibe, but playability is very high and specs are even higher.
The headstock is curvy, tapering in towards its waist, and Deans 'wings' logo in green and purple Abolone wrapped around a small notch taken out of the top. The front is plain gloss black, as is pretty much the whole guitar, with the Soltero logo in gold signature writing.
The rear of the headstock has the guitars serial number printed on, and 2 rows of 3-a-side Grover Rotomatics finished in satin Chrome.
The Mahogany neck is fairly slim, a D profile, and the black graphite nut width is 42mm. The rear has a gloss black finish, and the Rosewood fingerboard is fully bound up both edges in cream plastic, protecting the fret ends.
Fretwork is all to a high standard, and the Rosewood itself is good, hard and dark with a tight grain, well polished up with a smooth, waxy feel. Great for bends and fast riffing! Notice also the smart Soltero inlays here.
It's been well set up by Dean as well, from the factory the action at the 12th fret is low, less than 3mm across the board and intonation is pretty much spot on.
The set neck joins the Mahogany body at the 16th fret on the bass side and 19th on the treble, the cutaway here has a bit of extra chamfering that makes reaching the top frets easy.
The body of the Soltero is thick and heavy, it's a pretty weighty guitar, not good if you have a bad back! The back is Mahogany and this model has a full thickness Maple cap, this can be seen on the entire top edge where it hasn't been painted over. The top is raised up at the centre where the pickups and bridge are, and here you can see the thickness of the Maple is some 13mmm.
The front of the guitar has a pickup selector switch on the upper bout and the 4 controls are on the lower part, as is traditional on a Les Paul style guitar. The 2 strap hooks are locking style, very useful, and they're finished in satin Chrome. Notice the 'tuck', on the upper front of the body where the curves meet - something a bit different.
The 2 Dean Vintage pickups are also finished in satin Chrome, with cream plastic surrounds. The tune-o-matic style bridge and stop tailpiece both have the same finish, and look very substantial.
Played acoustically, the Soltero is loud and vibrant, you can feel the effect of the Maple cap in the resonance and superb sustain. This transfers extremely well into the 2 powerful humbuckers whick have more than enough volume for anyone!
As you'd probably expect, the bridge pickup has lots of bright, brittleness for screaming solos, whilst the warm and moody neck pickup rocks out on driving rhythm lines. A great rock guitar, but it still retains it's character on the clean channel as well, and is suitable for blues, jazz and funk as well.
A good all round LP style guitar, rocked up by Dean with a few interesting takes. Sounds and playability wise, it's excellent, nicely set up, a good neck and pickups, nice looking finish and hardware. Good value for money.
