The Dean Black Bolt is in tribute to Dimbag Darell, his familiar X shaped guitar, here with a fantastic lightening bolt design on the front.
If you're into rock music, want a guitar that can handle plenty of gain and one that will set you apart from the crowd, this has to be the guitar to go for!
The headstock is large, V shaped, a traditional Dean shape, with their Wings logo wrapped around the top, and 'DIME' appearing like it's been sprayed onto the gloss black front.
The rear is plain satin Maple, with the guitars serial number printed in black and 2 rows of 3-a-side matt black Grover Rotomatic tuners.
The Maple neck also has a satin finish, and it feels fairly slim, a D profile with a nut width of just 41mm. It's nicely set up from the factory as well, with an action of between 2-3mm across the board at the 12th fret.
The Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, and has white Alalone dot position markers in the usual places. Fretwork is all finished to a pro standard, and the wood itself has been nicely polished up, giving a smooth waxy feel. All in all, the Black Bolt has a high level of playability.
The neck is bolted to the Mahogany body, joining at the 19th freto on the bass side, the 18th on the treble, the cutaway here gives good access to all 22 frets. The back of the joint has a black metal plate with Deans signature logo engraved and a straphook in 1 corner.
The black of the body is plain black and flat, all unbound, the front though is a very deep metallic green colour with a distinctive lightening bolt that stretches into every corner of the pointy body. Very cool.
The controls are easy enough, 2 volumes and a master tone which are Dimebags own traction knobs, plastic ones attacked with a hot wire, and a 3 way pickup selector switch. The Black Bolt has a string thru body design, the strings pass through a V shaped metal plate and are held in place on the back of the guitar.
Onto the pickups, the neck has a traditional open coil humbucker which sounds very good when used on rhythm work on both the clean and drive channels, plenty of warmth, rich clarity and a naturally deep sound.
The bridge pickup is a bladed humbucker, usually a higher gain option of course, and this is certainly true here. Is extremely loud and bright, almost to the point where any body and bass are drowned out! It's great fun with loads of gain playing screaming lead stuff, enough power to cut through metal!
A good all round rock and metal guitar, not great for anything apart from moderate gain upwards though, but you'd hardly want to play anything else on this guitar, would you?
