The Vintage V300 is a folk acoustic guitar that has made a name for itself amongst guitar players for its outstanding quality and value for money. Having won the award for ‘Best Acoustic Guitar under £1000’ in Guitar magazine, November 2003, the V300 is not to be overlooked when considering purchasing a budget acoustic guitar. The V300 offers a solid Spruce top for better tone, sealed chrome machine heads and a finely detailed finish, all of which are indicators of quality, usually demanding a higher price tag.
The Machine heads are a key feature of the V300’s playability and trustworthy-ness as a guitar. Spaciously laid out on the headstock in the three a side formation they respond with precision to adjustments, with comfort guaranteed thanks to the large Grover-style kidney shaped knobs. This feature is sure to take all the difficulty out of tuning, especially for a beginner just getting to grips with their instrument. In addition to the tuners, the glossy headstock bears the vintage logo in pearloid.
Moving on to the neck of the guitar and everything is smooth and tidy, with each fret tucked neatly into the rosewood fingerboard by a cream binding. Young or inexperienced fingers should have no trouble with the frets as they have a low profile making easy work of chords and the strings are at just the right height to allow a fast action without muffling the tone. Large central dot position inlays give easy reference of fret number and there are also small black dot markers on the side of the fingerboard for convenience. The narrow neck, slender action and smooth frets make the V300 a rewarding guitar to play especially for learning those first tricky chords.
The folk body shape of the Vintage V300 has a narrower waist and thinner body than the standard dreadnaught acoustic guitar shape. This would make it a great guitar for younger players or those have a shorter reach around the body. A glossy finish surrounds the body, neck and headstock, allowing the natural wood tones shine through. On the front of the guitar the solid spruce top has a narrow creamy grain whilst the Nato back and sides are of a darker Mahogany-like pattern. The V300 is decorated with a multiple soundhole rosette and multi celluloid binding around the face. The back is also bound, creating cream lines that match those on the front and neck. A tortoise shell scratchplate adds the final touch to the decorations and protects the glossy layer underneath from your pick scratches.
The solid Spruce top ensures that the V300 delivers a thick tone that is sweetened by the narrow body shape. There is plenty to work with here from ringing harmonics at the higher frets to percussive treble, and hard strumming on the open chords produces ample bass too.
The V300 has a deservedly good reputation and for the money there are few contenders for quality and playability. The shape and feel of this guitar make it ideal for someone who is put off by the prospect of getting to grips with barre chords on a dreadnaught, and for this reason it is also suitable for younger players. If you are looking for a quality guitar on a budget then this instrument fits the bill perfectly – and then some!
As reviewed in Guitar Magazine Nov03:-
* gobsmackingly good for the money, and would be at even twice the price
* would stand comparison with any other acoustic, regardless of price
* a highly satisfying little player
* a downright steal
* simply a stonking little picker (!)
