Vintage have upgraded their Metal Axxe range for 2009, and now feature better hardware, a Flame Maple top and redesigned headstocks, giving a more aggressive appearance.
The Wraith bass guitar also has active pickups for amazing sounds, and is versatile enough for a broad range of music, not just death metal!
The headstock is a reverse style, pointing upwards with the machine heads fixed to the underside. The front has a thin Flame Maple veneer, finished in gloss black showing the stripes beneath. The 'XX' motif is sprayed on in white, and the small truss rod cover has the Vintage Metal Axxe logo.
The rear of the headstock is plain Maple, with a satin finish that continues for the whole neck, it's plain apart from the 4 machine heads which have a satin Chrome finish and Wilkinsons W logo.
The satin Maple neck feels pretty slim, a D profile with a nut width of just 41mm, good for smaller hands as well.
The fingerboard is Rosewood with white Abolone dot inlays and cool 'XX' 12th fret marker. It's unbound, very smooth and all fretwork is to a high standard, all making for a nice playing guitar, good for playing fast and hard.
The neck is bolted to the Eastern Poplar body, joining at the 19th fret on the bass side, 23rd on the treble side, and with the deep cutaway here, access to the full 2 octave 24 frets is excellent.
The body is a bit of a odd shape, lots of weird points, but it feels very balanced when played standing up, and it sits nicely on your knee when sat down. It's fairly heavy and big though - but then bass guitars are.
The body is all over gloss black, the front has a thin Flame Maple veneer showing a stripey grain and slightly lighter grey colour.
The 4 controls are found on the lower bout, a treble and bass control to shape the sound, master volume and pickup blend to switch between the 2 pickups. This allows a good range of sounds to be mixed up easily.
The pickups are Wilkinson, a slit coil 'P' style at the neck and single coil 'J' style at the bridge. The bridge itself is brush Chrome, with 4 individually adjustable saddles and a heavy duty looking raised tail keeping the strings where they should be.
Although the Wraith is predominantly a metal guitar, is pretty versatile, good for funk and jazz as well, but crank up the gain, and played hard, the active circuitry gives a great sound, pumping, driven bass line rip through your body with amazing clarity.
A good all round bass guitar, with great looks, decent hardware and pickups and plenty of rock attitude.
