This classic electric guitar by Aria is modelled on one of the first solid bodied guitars to be built in the 1950’s, and is still used by musicians today in a range of musical genres from Bob Dylan to Pearl Jam! Featuring a bolt on maple neck and slab-style Alder body the TEG003 has the same simplistic looks that made the original guitars so popular and successfully recreates that lively sound.
The chunky body of the guitar is curved at the waist and arches inwards below the neck joint to form the lower cutaway and protruding horn. A white plastic pick guard covers this section of the body, emphasising the curves and surrounding the pickup at the neck. A gloss black finish covers the front and back of the body, contrasted by the large white scratchplate. There is no paintwork on the neck and headstock, which are left with a natural satin finish and Maple wood grain. Chrome hardware can be found all over the body of the TE003 including the tuners, control knobs, bridge and the lipstick style neck pickup cover. There is also a pair of chrome straphooks either side of the body.
In keeping with the functional appearance of the Aria TEG003, decorations are kept to a minimum, limited to pearloid dots running down the rosewood fingerboard, and a black Aria logo on the headstock. The elongated arrow shaped headstock is elegantly curved and has six chrome tuners in a line along its upper side. A pair of string trees increases the tension of the higher strings over the nut, increasing tuning stability.
The bridge design of the TE003 remains true to the traditional style, consisting of a broad rectangular metal plate and three adjustable saddles which each support two strings. These strings are threaded through the body of the guitar and are anchored around the back, helping to enhance sustain by increasing the sound travelling through the body of the guitar.
The design of the guitar makes it very easy to play – with no protruding bridge mechanism to get in the way of your strumming hand. Standing up, the guitar balances well and it is easy to see why so many punk bands such as The Clash are famous for using style of guitar onstage.
The TE003 has a bright and cutting tone and the bridge pickup is slanted to enhance this effect. The characteristic single coil ‘twang’ is most noticeable with the bridge pickup selected and can be further emphasised by strumming nearer to the bridge. A chrome covered neck pickup provides an alternative sound with a warmer tone that retains brightness whilst adding a bluesy colour. The three way pickup selector allows the pickups to be selected independently or in unison for a blend of tones. The volume and tone controls have large chrome knobs and are situated in a chrome control plate that complements the guitar’s appliance-like design. The three way pickup selector sits just in front of these controls and has a large black plastic knob also bearing resemblance to a household electrical device!
The Aria TEG003 would be great for someone looking to buy a first guitar with an alternative style to the endless amount of Strats out there. The TEG003 does not have any high tech features but that’s exactly what it is all about, and considering the countless numbers of musicians that have sworn by this style of guitar over the last 50 years who are we to argue!
