If you've always fancied having a go on a banjo, then look no further than the TB18 from Tanglewood. Best known for their great acoustic guitars, Tanglewood have put a lot of thought into making this fine entry level instrument, the price won't break the bank, and you'll experience all of the joys of playing a great folk instrument.
The TB18 is a 5 stringed Banjo, with a Mahogany body, 18 brackets, Remo head and plenty of smart Chrome, giving a great look and lovely chiming sound.
The headstock is wonderfully curvy in a figure of 8 shape, in matt black with Tanglewoods logo in a thin gold scrip on the front. There is a truss rod cover on the front also, so the neck is fully adjustable should the need arise.
The back of the headstock, also matt satin black, has 4 Chrome machine heads with cream buttons.
The dark, Mahogany neck is very slim, top nut width just 29mm, with a U profile, so it feels surprisingly chunky! The lower 5th string joins the neck at the 5th fret, so here the neck suddenly jumps to 40mm wide, and you'll notice the extra tuning peg here, always looks a little odd to us guitarists!
The fingerboard is Rosewood, with black plastic binding and large white dot markers. It feels very smooth and fretwork is all very neat and tidy.
So, to the round body. The back, or Resonator, is gently bowled out, helping to amplify the sound. This is quite a nice piece of Mahogany with a deep, brown colour, fading to black around the edges, which are fully bound to the top and front in black, all very smart.
The back extends an inch or so further out from the Mahogany rim all round, and this has a white Remo head on top, held to tension with a Chrome tension hoop and 18 adjustable brackets. All of this is held onto the Resonator by 4 Chrome brackets with bolts.
At the bottom end is a Chrome tailpiece with a thumb screw to adjust string tension. Also here is a wire looped straphook, and there is another of these on the rim at about 11 'o' clock, near the neck.
The bridge is Maple with a Rosewood tip, and this can be placed anywhere on the head to suit your style, intonation, action and tension.
When in place and tuned up to G,D,G,B,D, you'll have loads of fun, tons of bright and cheerful sounds on offer that'll entertain yourself and others all night on this good quality, well priced beginners Banjo.
Suggested tuning is G,D,G,B,D.
