The traditional style of classical guitars has remained unchanged for hundreds of years and the Tanglewood TCO remains faithful to the ancestral design. In keeping with the finest classical guitars, the TCO bears a top of solid Spruce and nylon strings with a broad nut and increased inter-string distance, required for fingerpicking techniques. In addition to these features the TCO brings a touch of individuality with its vivid Ovenkol back and sides and Sonokeling Bridge and fingerboard.
The elongated slotted headstock of the TCO leans backward from the neck providing the strings with a steep break angle over the 55mm nut. The classically styled, 3 in a row tuners are finished in gold and point backwards to display cream pearloid knobs. As is the tradition with guitars of this style decorations are kept to a minimum, with the headstock terminating in a staggered tip and the tuners bearing floral engravings. At the rear the Mahogany neck feels sturdy and robust, with a lightly streaked grain pattern.
The broad neck bears a fingerboard made from Sonokeling Indian Rosewood for longevity and playability and all frets are neatly dressed with a wooden binding. There are no fretboard inlays, but along the upper side are small white dot position markers running between frets 5 to 12. The frets have a low profile and are set deeply into the fingerboard giving increased playability especially for subtle fingerwork. The back and sides of the Tanglewood TCO are made of Ovankol, which has a spectacular thickly striped grain of light and dark brown. This is contrasted by the light grain of the solid Spruce soundboard which has a gloss finish framed in a triple ply binding sealing the two planes together. The fingerboard extends over the face of the guitar where its curved end gives way to the soundhole. An intricate inlay extends round from on side of the fretboard to the other with a multi coloured pattern. This pattern is also found on the rectangular Sonokeling bridge which has a luxurious gloss finish.
The solid Spruce soundboard gives the guitar a lively voice, which makes for an interesting tone in combination with the nylon strings. The solid top enhances the resonance of the guitar making the notes ring out with the inherent mellow quality of a nylon strung instrument. The back and sides are of Ovenkol which has a voice somewhere between Rosewood and Mahogany, making the TCO a great all rounder.
The traditional neck width gives the TCO a greater accessibility for fingerpicking and classical techniques, although the low lying frets give it a comfortably light action and little effort is needed to get the most tone out of the strings. The narrow upper body also allows easy reach of the higher frets as they extend past the neck join at fret 12. The TCO offers great features at a budget conscious price, without compromising on tone and playability. For someone looking to further their musical reportois and improve their classical guitar playing the TCO would be a great instrument to inspire you along the way.
