This Parlour acoustic guitar from Tanglewood has all the attributes of a top quality instrument, including a solid Canadian Cedar top and a solid African Mahogany back, which work together to give a rich and complex sound. The guitar has a luxurious feel thanks to its semi satin finish and attractive Abalone decorations.
The traditionally styled slotted ‘peg head’ headstock is proudly inlaid with a large Abalone symbol glimmering in pearly green tones.
Though the tuners are of the backward pointing open type, they are reliably accurate and respond with precision to tuning adjustments. The strings emerge from the two indented head slots and slide up and over through carefully crafted slots in the bone nut. Bone is unsurpassed as a nut material for its ability to transmit vibrations and enhance the overall acoustics of the guitar.
The headstock and neck are all made of a single piece of solid mahogany that has a beautifully intricate light and dark grain with a superior texture. The rear base of the headstock has been crafted into a diamond shaped volute, which adds strength to the neck structure.
The rosewood fingerboard is neatly inlaid with small Abalone inlays and has side dots running up its upper surface. At the 12th fret the neck joins the body, which curves swiftly around to form the narrow waist of the guitar. The Rosewood continues over the face of the TW73 and terminates at the entrance to the soundhole. An intricate Abalone inlay also decorates the soundhole making the Tanglewood TW73 a great looking acoustic guitar.
A multiple celluloid binding highlights the guitars narrow upper curves and wider lower curves. This forms finely detailed white lines that emphasise the contrast between the different woods of the top and sides. The solid Canadian Cedar top is characteristically rich in colour with a narrow grain that runs in neat lines lengthways across the face of the guitar. The sides and back of the TW73 have the deep brown interlocking grain of African Mahogany, which shines in the light under a translucent semi satin finish.
The TW73 gives the overall impression of a top quality instrument and due to its solid wood construction will mature with time. The inherent properties of the solid Canadian Cedar top give it an open mellow tone that is especially responsive to light playing styles.
The solid African Mahogany in the back adds volume and resonance to the tone with a voice full of harmonic interest. The slim profile of the neck gives it an effortless playability in combination with an action that remains low right up the neck. The consistency of the neck, frets and string action allows every note to ring out to its full potential with every playing style accommodated for. This superior tone in conjunction with a light and malleable action make the Tanglewood TW73 a very enjoyable instrument to play.
Parlour guitars were originally designed to become ‘part of the furniture’ and the TW73 would be just as at home in the smaller grip of a younger guitarist as it would in the hands of an experienced finger stylist. In any case the TW73 is destined to become part of the family and would make a worthy addition to any household.
