Tanglewoods superb all new semi-acoustic guitar for 2009, the TSB59, has Ivory binding, a set neck, chrome covered humbuckers and a Maple body and neck.
This is a very traditional guitar style currently enjoying an enormous upsurge in popularity, the choice of all manner of famous guitarists due to it's versatiliy as much as image.
This TSB59 model has individual tone and volume controls for each pickup, Grover style tuners and a Maple body, all good quality stuff, making it a highly recommended guitar and great value for money.
The headstock is small and compact, with a gloss paint job to the front and rear, as has the whole guitar in fact, and Tangewoods logo shining out brightly in smart green Abolone, with a nice looking crown inlay as well. The truss rod cover displays the model number in white.
The back of the head is pretty plain, with 2 rows of 3-a-side die-cast tuners, in Chrome.
The Maple neck is fat and chunky, not overly so, but a good hanfull, top nut width is 43mm. The rear of the neck has a heavy gloss paint finish, and you can see the light wood grain throughout, except on the black version.
The Rosewood fingerboard is fully bound with Ivory ABS, and this is a really good bit of wood, a very tight and dark grain, almost like Ebony, nicely polished. An excellent neck that is really easy to play.
Action height is nice and low, 2mm across the board at the 12th fret, and large white Abolone dots mark the usual fretboard positions.
The set neck joins the Maple body at the 19th fret on both side, and the double cutaway shape allows good access to all 22 frets.
Both the top and back of the TSB59 are fully bound in cream plastic, as are the 2 large 'f' hole on the front of the guitar. The back is pretty much plain, and again depending on your colour choice, you should be able to see the lovely wood grain through the lacquer. The back has a slight bowl effect, helping to project the sound from the semi-hollow body into the centre.
It's a fairly slim body, about 44mm all round, although it is quite heavy and the body is big. It does, however, sit nicely on the lap if played sat down, and is equally comfortable when standing up.
The TSB59 has a pair of Entwistle Vintage Alnico Chrome plated humbuckers, they give a good sound, plenty of bright, characterful tones on offer on the clean channel, and enough power for a variety of rock and blues sounds with a bit of distortion.
Unplugged, the guitar is loud enough to play acoustically, a good woody, deep, resonant sound that that semi-acoustic guitar are so well known for.
The bridge, a tune-o-matic style, and the stop tail piece are both in Chrome, and there are 4 controls, 2 volumes and 2 tones, in amber. The 3 ply scratchplate is black.
In all, a good value semi acoustic, pretty faithful to the original and only about a tenth of the price! Sounds are good, playability is excellent and it's got all round quality.
