The Epiphone Sheraton is a luxurious semi-acoustic electric guitar with a sweet resonant tone and decorations that give it a superior quality. The solid construction of this guitar with its set neck, one piece maple top and sound block all contribute to the Sheraton’s tone, which can easily be heard with the guitar unplugged.
The headstock is an enlarged version of the typically symmetrical Epiphone variety, featuring kidney shaped gold Grover tuners, a glossy black and natural back finish along with intricate triple binding around the edge. From the top of the truss rod cover sprouts a plume of pearly floral pattern work which blossoms at the top of the headstock as it reaches a highly stylised Epiphone logo.
The meticulously detailed finishing on the Epiphone Sheraton continues down the neck with each block position inlay consisting of interlocking Perloid blocks and triangles of silver and green. The Rosewood fingerboard is entirely bound in a triple cream ply that also runs around the top and bottom of the guitar. This binding secures the 22 well-rounded frets into position and reduces friction for your fretting hand contributing to a comfortable playing experience. The rear of the neck shines with natural wood tones through its smooth glossy finish in keeping with the rest of the Sheratons body. On a closer inspection then neck appears to be made from three sections of maple wood joined together with two dark bands that run up the neck and behind the headstock.
The rounded body of the Sheraton runs seamlessly away from the set neck and features an arched maple top and solid centre block with hollow cavities either side. A cream binding runs around each f-shaped opening to the sides creating a smooth edge to the natural wood grain of the top, all finished in a glossy shine. This one piece top and back construction give the Sheraton the tone and sustain of a solid body guitar whilst the hollow wings make it great for mellow Jazz tones.
The Sheraton is equipped with all the hardware that you would expect on a top class guitar. A raised scratchplate with contoured chrome Epiphone emblem and deep brown tortoiseshell finish protect the body from your picking hand. Either side of the lower ‘f’ are separate volume and tone controls with tapered translucent dials that match the gold hardware of the tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. Epiphone have kitted the Sheraton out with their high-end electronics, including Epiphone designed Alnico Classic magnet pickups giving a powerful and versatile tone. Nice clean fat blues or jazz tones can be harnessed from the neck pickup whilst the treble pickup has a great range of tones from bright jangle to clean and transparent. Dial in some distortion and you dive swiftly into rock territory!
This is definitely a guitar for the entertainer, with its engaging tones and glorious presence. Unplugged, the Sheraton retains its sonic interest and this would make a great guitar for casual strumming around the home or on the move – luckily it comes with a tough hard case so you won’t have to worry about damage during transport!
