The Paul Reed Smith ‘Special Edition’ Custom Tremolo is a finely constructed guitar featuring a Mahogany body, set Mahogany neck and flame Maple top.
Dual zebra style humbucking pickups provide a precise and powerful sound, with a rich depth of tone characteristic of the Mahogany body. The PRS designed tuners offer performance you can rely on, and the optional PRS tremolo bridge puts more expression at your fingertips.
This guitar looks amazing, and sounds just as good, with unbeatable playability the PRS Custom is sure to expand your musical horizons.
The PRS SE Custom is available in either a variety of finishes, all with the stunningly intricate, stripy flame Maple veneer. A Maple binding runs around the front of the body, separating the coloured front finish with the gloss black of the back and sides.
The neck has a ‘wide fat’ profile giving it a very sturdy feel, and it is also finished in a gloss black lacquer. The 25” scale gives you more room for exploring elaborate fingering techniques, which in conjunction with the superior Rosewood fingerboard make this guitar such a pleasure to play. The strings slip and slide against the frets with no friction at all thanks to immaculate polishing, and this smooth action translates into crystal clear tone and incredible sustain.
Set into the finely grained Rosewood are a beautiful set of blue Abalone ‘moons’, each containing a crescent that shimmers in the light, with customary double inlay at fret 12.
The neck heel thickens out before joining the body at the second to last fret, and this bulk behind the upper frets lets you reap the full tonal potential of the Mahogany body. A deep scallop is carved into the smaller lower cutaway, which acts to cradle the fretting hand of those who spend all their time soloing!
At the headstock the chrome tuners are arranged into a three a side formation, getting narrower towards the jagged tip. Between these lie the Special Edition Custom logo, and the truss Rod is labelled with PRS.
Around the back each machine head is PRS branded on the sealed gear mechanism, and the large turning posts give you accurate control over string tension. Tuning stability is also enhanced by the accurately cut top nut, with deep grooves to maintain perfect string height above the fretboard.
The PRS designed tremolo bridge houses individually adjustable saddles, and a slim tremolo arm that pushes smoothly into place. Four well-positioned springs in the back cavity of the guitar hold the bridge securely in place and give the tremolo a smooth, refined and flowing action. This works well for both trills and dips right up to full on pitch dives, without disrupting the tuning. Excellent.
The stoptail version has PRS's own designed 'wrap-around' style bridge.
The SE Custom is fitted with open coil PRS designed humbuckers, set in cream surrounds. Matching black and cream ‘zebra’ style pickup housing adds a vintage touch to the modern PRS looks. The master volume and tone controls have the traditional black with white numbered dials showing through a clear resin, and the three-way pick up selector has a cream knob to match the pickups.
Playing an electric guitar unplugged is a useful way to tell how its construction affects its sound. A casual strum on the PRS SE Custom and you can hear the Mahogany body resonating with the strings, indicating its ability to provide a thick and full bodied tone. The Maple cap also acts to brighten up the sound.
The neck pickup is perfect for sucking up all of the Mahogany body tone for a very well presented clean sound. Barre chords ring out at the lightest touch, and across the fretboard you’ll find all sorts of harmonics to play with. This pickup also works well in conjunction with the tone control, which can be rolled back for that mysterious ambient sonic character.
With increasing distortion the humbucker keeps its pace whilst holding noise to a minimum, and on full blast
