Top - Solid Spruce Back - Solid Mahogany Sides - 'Bonded' Mahogany Binding - Maple Fingerboard - Rosewood, green diamond abalone markers Machines - Gold Kluson style machine heads, small buttons Pickup - B-Band with built in tuner (TW170AC-CE only)
Based on Martins 000 sized acoustic, this is Tanglewood's smaller, folk size acoustic guitar from their best selling Premier Range.
The TW170 features a full gloss finish to the body and neck, gold Kluson style enclosed machines and Elixir strings for the best tone available.
The headstock is square, no curves here, straight lines and sharp corners. The front is faced in dark Rosewood with a gloss finish and Tanglewoods logo shining out brilliantly in green and purple Abolone.
The rear of the head is also gloss, as is the whole guitar, Mahogany with a lovely speckled grain showing through. We hav 2 rows of 3-a-side tuners, in gold, Kluson stlye with small buttons. The neck is a single piece of wood, and has a diamond shaped volute to reinforce the angle of the headstock and neck.
The neck is nice and slim, a broad D profile, nut width is 43mm rising to 53mm at the 12th fret. The back of the neck has a gloss finish, and the Rosewood fingerboard is nicely bound in Maple. Fretwork is to Tanglewoods usual high standards, and the board has beautiful diamond shaped Abolone position markers.
The neck joins the body at the 14th fret, and this body shape, being closer to a dreadnaught, has squarish shoulders and a good tummy tuck at the waist, so it's quite a bit smaller and more manageable than a Dreadnaught, and a slightly different shape to a Parlour guitar.
The back and sides of the TW170 are solid Mahogany, all gloss finish, and both the top and back are nicely bound in Maple. The top is also solid, Spruce this time. When you consider the price of these guitars, just over £200 for an all solid guitar with Maple binding, this is looking good value.
The front is a simple affair, a large plastic red tortishell scratchplate, butterfly style Rosewood bridge with white pins and a black and white soundhole rosette. No fancy bits here, all the money is spent on the wood materials.
As you might expect with an all solid body, the TW170 sounds bright, punchy and sparkly. A good all round sound, plenty of bass despite it's smaller body size, ringing highs with lots of sustain and good clarity for finger pickers. A very good all rounder, great for performing with due to its ease of use and punchy tones.
The electro acoustic version is great as well, with a cutaway body joining the neck at the 17th fret. This model is fitted with the Finnish made B-Band EQ, and has a built in tuner, all very small and tidy, a great asset.
