Top - Solid Spruce Back/Sides - Quilted Ash Binding - Hopi Neck - Mahogany Fingerboard - Rosewood with Hopi inlays, 20 frets Nut width - 44mm Machines - Exclusive Grover 18:1 gear ratio tuners Bridge - Rosewood Butterly Bridge Pickup - BBand A3 preamp (D46CE only)
Solid spruce tops and quilted ash back & sides are combined with Hopi binding and fingerboard inlays and give these guitars the flavor of the Southwest United States, something a little bit different.
Grover machine heads provide decent tuning stability, while the neck is Mahogany with a Rosewood 20 fret fingerboard. The inlays, nicely arranged on one side, are Hopi, an exotic wood.
Hopi continues to be found as it binds both the neck and the body, which itself is pretty exotic, this time a very nice looking quilted Ash.
The solid Spruce top is adorned with a very interesting soundhole rozette, and equally interesting 'Butterfly' bridge.
The D46S features Washburns Crown shaped headstock, finished in a heavy gloss lacquer allowing the fantastic grain of the Quilted Ash face to show through, it's really impressive, no 2 instruments look the same!
The rear of the head headstock is Mahogany, not quite so impressive, but it has 2 rows of impressive chrome Grover tuners, 18:1 gearing, they work just great.
The neck is also Mahogany, it's pretty slin, a shallow D profile, with a gloss finish and a lovely Rosewood fingerboard, fully bound in black plastic.
Fretwork is excellent as you should expect, and the Rosewood itself is nicely polished up to a smooth, waxy finish. The neck inlays are wonderful, offset onto the bass edge of the fingerboard, they're made of Hopi, an exotic wood, intricately done and featuring a small mosaic of white, black, gold and green woods. Lovely.
The neck joins the body at the 14th fret, standard to all dreadnaughts of course, the Cutaway version though goes down the 16th on the treble side. The back of the heel joint has a black cap, could be Ebony, with Washburns W logo on.
The body on the Southwest Series is pretty amazing, Quilted Ash, with just about the most beautiful grain we've seen, swirly and streaks of dark and light wood grain, very nice.
More intricate mosaics of Hopi are on the body as well, the bookmatched back having a centre join, the top binding, black plastic and Hopi inlays, and the attractive soundhole rosette. Someones put a lot of time and effort into making this guitar.
The top of the D46S is solid Spruce, it too has a nice grain, not as nice as Quilted Ash, but you can't have everything.
It all adds up to one great looking guitar, but how does it play I hear you ask. Every bit as good, the neck is easy going, strumming chords is a joy and finger picking just sounds clear and precise with plenty of warmth and charm.
We have the D46 in 6 or 12 string versions of both the dreadnaught, and the Cutaway electro acoustic model, the D46CE, which comes fitted with a top quality B-Band A3 pre-amp.
A great look and wonderful sounding guitar, Washburns D46S is great value for money, remember all the intricate mosaic detail and exotic woods. A real talking point, it'll impress everyone who see's it with it's striking appearance.
