Hot off the Tanglewood production line, the new Evolution series represents all that is great about sub £200 acoustic guitars.
Stunning workmanship, quality materials and lovely finishes are Tanglewoods trademarks, and these guitars offer remarkable value for money.
Gone are the Spruce Tops of last century! The Evolution Series feature Cedar tops, wood binding and either Mahogany or Rosewood bodies.
The designs are the same across the range, starting with a plain and simple square headstock, gloss finish to the front (and back on the gloss finished models), a shining Tanglewood logo, and Chrome tuners, with black bottons on the CSR version.
Maple binding runs around the headstock and down either side of the fingerboard. The neck is satin or gloss finish, depending on the version, joining the body at the 14th fret.
The Rosewood fingerboard itself is good and smooth, the frets are nicely polished and very tidy, with white Abolone dot position markers.
The body is a standard Dreadnaught size, with Maple binding and featuring either laminated or solid Cedar tops. These give an aged, almost antique appearance, very different. Although there is an absance of a scratchplate, Tanglewood are good enough to provide a self-adhesive Red Tortiseshell one if you prefer to have one.
The CLN (laminated) and CSN both have a lovely silky satin finish, whilst the CSG has a heavy gloss finish to the body and neck. These all feature Mahogany back and sides.
The CSR version has a gloss finish with a darker and tighter grained Rosewood back and sides.
All versions feature a simple Abolone soundhole rosette, Rosewood bridge and nicely finished bridge pins.
Also available in this range is the budget 12 string version 12Y/CLN, featuring a laminated Cedar top and the satin finish.
A great introduction to Tanglewood guitars and great value.
