The ESP Ltd AX-50 is a great looking, quality rock guitar that plays well and sounds good on a budget.
The headstock is a bit of a bizarre shape, giving attitude right from the start! Finished in matt black, it houses 6 ESP machine heads in a 3-a-side array, giving accurate and precise tuning. and eyecatching 3D 'LTD' logo in white and gold is printed onto the front of the headstock.
The bolt-on neck is slin and plays fast, helped by the smooth matt black paintwork, quality fretwork and a very nice Rosewood fingerboard. Small dots provide the position markers, with ESP's traditional 12'th fret pearloid block, with the model number shown.
The angular body is finished in the same matt black, and this really is a pretty unique shape, great for being noticed on stage! The upper horn, which has a straphook on the back, is larger than the lower, giving good balance, the cutaways here give easy access to all 24 extra jumbo frets.
The AX-50 has 2 LH-150 open coil humbuckers, with black surrounds, giving a nice range of sounds, but this guitar is primarily made for metal, so use plenty of distortion to get the best out of it!
The strings pass over a TOM bridge, similar to a tune-o-matic, and then pass through the body. This gives a lot of resonance through the Basswood body, and means that heavier guage strings can easily be used on this guitar, great for detuning. A single volume and tone control, and 3 way selector switch provide the control system.
All in all, a great entry level rocker from ESP, plays very nicely, good pickups and outlandish looks.
