MIDI

The term 'MIDI' stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI devices are digital instruments that don't make sounds themselves but give instructions to other computers to make the sounds based on what MIDI data is created from the MIDI device.

For example: when you press a key on the MIDI keyboard, the keyboard sends down the wire to the computer the following:

• Note Number (which note you're playing)
• Note on (this will tell the computer to keep playing the sounds until a note off message is received)
• Note off (this tells the computer to stop playing the sound)
• Velocity (how hard you hit the note; makes the computer play a loud or quiet sound)

In simple terms the MIDI keyboard is just like a remote controller for a musical instrument. So, don't buy a MIDI keyboard thinking that sound will come out of it! Because, they just transmit digital data!
