The five-string Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V guitar was designed with the gigging bass player in mind.
This Alder bodied bass offers classic styling and modern features such as a comfortable C-shaped Maple neck with 20-fret pau ferro fingerboard, four-ply brown shell pickguard, two dual-coil ceramic Noiseless five-string Jazz Bass pickups with nickel-plated pole pieces, and a three-band active EQ with treble, mid and bass boost/cut.
Distinctively attractive looking with a clear, thunderous sound.
The large headstock has a satin Maple finish, with Fenders logo in silver on the front, JAZZ BASS in black block letters, and a tiny 'Deluxe Series' in black script. The front also has a large Chrome string tree keeping pressure on the 3 treble strings.
The back of the headstock is fairly plain, just a single row of 5 Gotoh machine heads, very good quality, and the guitars serial number.
The Maple neck has a satin finish, and the familiar 'skunk' stripe along the back. This being a 5 string bass, the neck is quite wide, nut width is 47mm, but it's shallow and feels thin in your hand.
The 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, with large white dot position markers. The finish is excellent as you'd expect.
The bolt-on neck joins the Alder body at the 16th fret on the bass side, and 20th on the treble, the cutaway here giving good access to all 22 frets.
The back of the body has a square Chrome neck plate with 4 bolts, and a small battery cavity on the lower bout, behind the controls, and a large rib cage chamfer giving a comfortable playing position.
The front has a large 4 ply plastic scratchplate, finished in deep red tortoiseshell, not real of course, and Chrome underneath the 4 controls, the output socket has been moved to the lower edge to make way for the extra knob.
There are 2 pickups, one close to the bridge, the other midway between the bridge and end of the neck, both has 10 pole-pieces, 2 for each string, and 'noiseless' written in gold script.
So, to the controls, first is a master volume, then the pickup blend, all neck at one extreme, all bridge at the other. The next is a stacked pot, the bottom part controls bass cut/boost, the top is treble cut/boost, and the last knob is the mid cut/boost.
The guitar plays beautifully, it's heavy but not uncomfortable, well balanced and lots of fun. The 3 band EQ gives you plenty of variety of really shape you sound, it's just about the most versatile bass we've played.
Sounds are crisp and sharp, with a real cutting bite that will give your guitarist a run for his money!
An excellent 5 string bass guitar with the looks, power, poise and sounds to get you through any gig with no fuss at all.
