The Eclipse is ESP's most popular guitar from their Japanese made Standard range. In the classic LP single cut mould, but with enough of their own styling to set it apart from the mainstream.
This Eclipse 1 has a pair of EMG active humbuckers, gold satin Gotoh hardware and an Ebony fingerboard, all making a guitar that sounds and plays awsome.
The Eclipse has a small and compact headstock, tapering in slightly at the middle, with a curvy end. The front is satin black, bound in a 5 ply, aged cream, reminds me of Caramac, the old chocolate bar - nice. The front also ESP's signature logo and Eclipse in gold script, whilst the 2 ply black truss rod cover is the same shape as the headstock.
The rear of the headstock is also satin black, with the guitars serial number and ESP logo in gold, and 2 rows of 3-a-side gold Gotoh Magnum locking machine heads. these are simple to use, undo the screw on top, post the string through, do up the screw, tune up and snip the end of the string off. Certainly holds tune very well.
The neck also has a satin black finish, lovely and smooth, nut width is 42mm, so pretty slim, and the neck has a fairly shallow D profile.
The fingerboard is Ebony, and an excellent bit of wood as well, beautiful and smooth, well polished up and super slippery, great for you shredders out there. The silver Nickle frets are extra jumbo's, also well polished up and all at an even height, no rough edges here.
The fingerboard is bound up both sides in the caramac binding, with a thin white pin stripe against the Ebony, giving a bit of a classier look. The large inlays are ESP's traditional wavy blocks, in white Abolone, with an ESP block marker at the 12th fret.
The neck joins the Mahogany and Maple body at the 16th fret on the bass side, and the 19th on the treble, traditional stuff for a Single Cut of course, no chamfering on the cutaway but upper fret access is not a problem.
The body has a satin black finish to the front and back, with 5 ply caramac binding to the front. The back is flat, with quite a bit of chamfering on the upper bout, giving a comfortable position against the body when played.
The front of the Eclipse is pretty much plain - no scratchplate, black pickup surrounds and 4 black speed knobs, this Eclipse 1 has the more traditional control layout of 2 tones and 2 volumes, the Eclipse 2 has only a master tone.
The hardware looks pretty cool though, the tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece are Gotoh, in a smooth satin gold finish, a very classy look, and they look very substantial as well, built to last.
Onto the EMG pickups, the best bit of course, you get the 60 at the neck, the all round rock and metal rhythm workhorse, and the renowned 81 at the bridge for those screaming solo's and lead work.
Plugged in, the guitar seriously rocks. This guitar is going to be played on the drive channel mostly, and here it really excels, the EMG's are so powerful, precise and clear that they'll cut through concrete.
With the beautiful Ebony fingerboard and satin neck, this guitar is a shredders dream, fast runs around the board seem a breeze, bends are so easy with athe light gauge strings - it's just a great guitar to play.
Includes a good quality hard case with a large ESP logo on the front!
