ESP make high quality electric guitars, and this EC256FM model from their Ltd Range is no exception.

With a very cool 'aged' Honeyburst finish looking like something straight from the 50's, a pair of decent humbuckers for excellent all round sound, a Mahogany body and set neck with a Flame Maple top, this is a high spec guitar for not much money.

The curvy, and slightly rebellious looking, headstock has satin black finish to the front, with the Ltd logo in gold script at the top. The face is bound in aged creamy plastic with a few scuff marks and wear on the points.

The back of the headstock is satin Mahogany, with the country of manufacture and guitars serial number stamped on, and 2 rows of 3-a-side, unworn, Chrome ESP branded machine heads.

A small reinforcing volute is a little lower as we get to the neck, and this is showing signs of wear as well.

The Mahogany neck also has a satin finish, as does the whole guitar. It's a very slim feeling neck, a shallow D profile, and with the satin finish, very easy to get along with.

The Rosewood fingerboard is bound in aged cream as well, the nut is also this colour, giving a look of having been played in too many smokey clubs of the years.

The board has ESP's own pearloid wave inlays, with a block marker at the 12th fret showing the guitars model number. The Rosewood is decent, no wear has been applied here, and the extra jumbo frets are very nicely finished.

Nicely set-up by the factory, this guitar has an action of 2-3mm across the board at the 12th fret.

The EC-256's neck joins the Mahogany body at the 16th fret on the bass side and 18th on the treble, the cutaway here has a sharp point and a decent bit of chamfering at the back giving excellent access to all 22 frets.

The body itself has a flame Maple cap, very aged here, with a faint stripy appearance and some fake wear and tear around the edges. The top is also bound in smoky cream plastic, matching the pickup surrounds.

The back and front have a waxy feeling satin finish, and the back has a large area of ribcage chamfering, not normal for a LP, but it does feel nicer to play, if taking a little of the weight and resonance away.

Around the front we have 2 volume controls and a master tone, all amber speed knobs, the tone having a push/pull coil tap turning the humbuckers to a thinner single coil sound.

A standard tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece and 2 Chrome covered humbuckers complete the EC256FM.

Acoustically, the EC-256 is loud, and this transfers to the amp as well. Clean sounds are good with plenty of tonal options provided by the responsive humbuckers, which with the coil tap can turn in a more brittle, glassy sound as well.

On the overdrive channel, the EC256 performs excellently, doing everything you can expect with minimal fuss.

A great looking 'distressed' LP style guitar, from a top quality brand offering really good value for money.
