Full on rock from ESP here with the M-300, featuring arrow inlays, a Flame Maple top, reverse headstock, EMG pickups and a Floyd Rose double locking tremolo bridge.
Lets start with the M300's headstock. It's a reverse style, so the tuners are on the underside, with square sides that taper away to a nasty looking point.
The front of the headstock has a grey flame Maple veneer, with the ESP logo sprayed underneath the lacquer in gold and white. It's bound in white plastic, and there is a long string tree that covers all 6 strings, keeping pressure to the maximum.
The back is fairly plain, the single row of 6 black Chrome ESP branded die-cast machine heads, the serial number of the guitar and ESP's logo covering everything.
The strings pass over the locking nut, nor black Chrome hardware here, and on down the Maple neck. The rear of the neck has a gloss finish over the thru black stain, so you can make out the grain of the Maple. The neck itself is very slim, the back being almost flat, curving up at the sides. This guitar is designed for fast players.
The Rosewood fingerboard is also bound in white plastic, and the M-300 has white pearloid arrow markers, not quite the shark fins you'll find on an Ibanez, but you can tell where ESP got the idea from! At the 12th fret is a block marker with M-300FM (flame Maple) shown.
The guitar has been well set up by the factory, the action is about 2-3mm at the 12th fret, and the Floyd Rose bridge is perfectly balanced.
The 3 piece Maple neck joins the Mahogany body at the 19th fret on the bass side, 23rd on the treble side, and here we have a deep cutaway with lots of chamfering to give no access problems to the full 2 octaves.
The M-300 has a neck through body construction, and this can be seen on the back of the body through the dark grey woodstain. Either side of this Maple are the 2 Mahogany wings.
The back of the guitar has a large square plate to access the back of the tremolo bridge, a coffin shaped plate to get to the electrics, and a smaller plate to get to the battery that powers the EMG pickups.
The front of the M-300 has a flame Maple cap, so you can see the stripy grain of wood, 2 black Chrome control knobs, volume and tone, and a simple 3 way selector switch.
The 2 EMG pickups have black satin covers and black surrounds. The official Floyd Rose Special bridge is finished in smoky black Chrome, with a long, thin tremolo arm.
To play, the ESP Ltd M-300FM is great fun, the easy, slim neck makes running up and down the neck a breeze, the Floyd Rose tremolo is light and responsive, great for dive bombs and the like, but the pickups take the first prize.
EMG's are designed for heavy rock and metal, but they also have a really nice clean sound, plenty of brightness and clarity. Turn up the gain though and they really come into their own, heavy riffing, power chords, ripping solo's, they excel at it all.
This is a seriously good value guitar, consider all of the quality components, the 2 full octave scale, it's great for downtuning, so with the continuous popularity of modern metal, this is one guitar that you should seriously consider buying.
