Fenders new and innovative Blacktop guitar series expand the sonic horizon of the classic Fender Telecaster guitar by powering it with high-gain humbucking pickups.
Sleek and supercharged, the Fender Blacktop Telecaster HH has dual over-wound Alnico humbucking pickups, with other distinctive touches including skirted black amp knobs, a reversed chrome control plate and a hard-tail bridge.
Other features include an Alder body, Maple neck with 9.5?-radius Rosewood fretboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, gloss polyester finish and chrome hardware.
We start with the traditional slim Tele style headstock, Fenders spaghetti logo on the glossy front and TELECASTER in block letter. The back is also finished in gloss, with the guitars serial numer, Made in Mexico and a row of 6 enclosed, Fender branded die-cast Chrome machine heads.
The back of the Maple neck is also finished in gloss, and we have a pale Rosewood 'skunk' stripe here. The neck itself is fairly slin, Fenders 'modern' C shape, no tree trunks here, this is made for rocking!
The fingerboard on this model is Rosewood, very dark with a tight, hard grain. Fretwork is excellent as you'd be right to expect, medium jumbo frets - again, this guitar is made for rock! We have 21 frets with large white dot markers. Set up nicely by the Mexican factory, we have an action as supplied of between 2-3mm at the 12th fret.
The neck joins the Alder body at the 17th fret on the bass side, 20th on the treble, the cutaway here gives good access to the top frets. The body itself is finished in an all over metallic Candy Apple Red, the back has a decent ribcage chamfer, giving a very comfortable playing position (for a Tele at least).
The front of the Blacktop Telecaster has a traditional 3 ply back scratchplate, notice the control plate, upside down, the volume is at the top, then tone, and the 3 way pickup selector switch is at the bottom. The knobs are black 'skirted' style, the type you find on Fender amplifiers.
The bridge is a simple, small Chrome die-cast affair, with thru body stringing and 6 single Chrome die-cast saddles, all adjustable for intonation and string height.
So, 2 covered humbuckers on a Tele I hear you ask! I think Fender are taking on Gibson here, and to very good effect. The Vintage Alnico pickups are powerful, with a large tonal range. On your clean channel, whilst you won't get that traditional Tele twang, you will still get sweet highs, good body depth and clarity, great for country, jazz and pop.
But the Blacktop comes alive on the drive channel, the powerful humbuckers sound amazing as you crank up the gain, going from funk, though blues and onto rock and, yes, metal. This Telecaster is great for metal!
If, like me, you love Telecasters, but sometimes need more power and drive, then this very versatile Blacktop will give you a great alternative. Good for a wide variety of uses, it kind of looks traditional, plays modern, and definitely sounds very new.
