With their years of building experience, Fenders Custom Shop craftsmen created a "dream list" of specs, and this customized '50s-style Telecaster guitar designed by Master Builder Chris Fleming has it all!
Special features include a soft V-shaped neck, custom-shop designed pickups with four-way switching, knurled chrome knobs and "Custom Shop Designed" neckplate.
Hailing from Ensenada, Baja California, just over the Mexican border, the Classic Player Baja Telecaster has many extra features not found on the Standard model. There are also a few spec differences, so lets see what they are!
The headstock is classic Telecaster, gloss to the front and rear, with Fenders spaghetti logo and TELECASTER in block capitals on the front, the serial number and Made in Mexico on the back, along with a single row of vintage style machine heads with small buttons.
The back of the Maple neck has a heavy gloss lacquer and Fenders familiar Rosewood Skunk Stripe. The fingerboard is part of the same piece of wood, again heavily lacquered, with large black dot position markers and 21 medium jumbo frets a nod to a more modern feel, along with the 9.5" radius board, great for easy bending.
The neck is a 'soft V shape', quite different to the easy going neck on a Standard, this one is a real handful, very chunky and solid feeling.
Set up beautifully at the factory, as all Fenders are before we get them, we have a action of 2mm at the 12th fret, the nut width is 43mm.
The neck is bolted to the Alder body, the Chrome neck plate at the back is beautifully engraved with Fender Custom Shop Designed.
The body itself is a proper old slab of wood, no chamfering, beveling or anything here. Rounded corners is about all you'll be getting!
The body on this version is gloss black, so no woodgrain on show, and we have a matching single ply black scratchplate, held on by 5 screws only, giving a very cool appearance.
The bridge has 3 brass saddles, arguably tonally best, and here we have a Custom Shop Broadcaster pickup, a more powerful pickup with a stronger mid range.
At the neck end, we have a Custom Shop 'Twisted Tele' pickup, again a higher output than standard, with a silver/nickel cover instead of brass that gives a sound tonally closer to a Strat pickup.
Onto the controls, and we have a 4 way pickup selector, master tone, and a master volume that also has a push-push switch in the top to active the S-1 switching.
So, what do these extra controls allow you to do?
On the slide switch, positions 1 and 3 are your bridge and neck pickups in isolation, position 2 is both pickups in parallel and 4 both in series. Then you have the S-1 switch, hit this and positions 2 and 4 go out of phase, giving a 'hollow' sound with much less body and depth, more jangle and brittleness.
With all of these tonal possibilities at your disposal, the Baja Telecaster makes for a very versatile instrument, great on a dirty channel with some beautiful raw sounding noise, probably best on a clean channel or lighter distortion where the powerfully clear pickups and tonal options give a more useful range of tones.
A Custom Shop designed Telecaster with amazing pickups, tonal options for series and parallel and in and out of phase options.
A Super Telecaster!
