1972 was a magical year for the Fender Telecaster guitar, which was then available in several new designs and with more options than ever before.

The ?72 Telecaster Custom features many of those options, including an Alder body, a C-shaped Maple neck, bullet truss rod, ?70s vintage hardtail strings-through Strat bridge, three-bolt neckplate, a Wide Range humbucking pickup at the neck and a traditional single-coil pickup at the bridge.

The front of the ultra slim headstock is plain Maple, with a gloss finish, Fender's script logo in black, TELECASTER in block letters and Custom in script, all in black.

2 small Chrome string trees keep the treble strings in check, and notice the 'bullet' truss rod, poking some 10mm out of the hole behind the nut.

The back of the headstock is fairly plain, Made in Mexico and the guitars serial number are printed, and there are 6 nicely shaped in line Chrome enclosed machine heads, with Fenders F stamped onto, and small octagonal Chrome buttons - very vintage style.

The neck has the same gloss finish, the back also has Fenders familiar 'skunk' stripe where the truss rod has been fitted. The neck and fingerboard are all the same piece of Maple, this is Fenders Modern C shape, and it's very comfortable, great for hands of all sizes.

The light coloured Maple fingerboard also has the gloss finish, it's fairly shiny, and this makes playing somewhat easier in my opinion, bends and fast runs seem a lot smoother, and this is also aided by some lovely Mexican vintage fretwork.

The factory have also set the guitar up beautifully, action is only about 2mm across the board at the 12th fret, no buzzing though. The synthetic bone nut width is 42mm.

The neck is bolted to the heavy Alder body, all held together by a U shaped Chrome neck plate and 3 screws, again engraved with Fenders F. This plate also has a tiny hole, allowing you to slightly adjust the neck angle with Fenders Micro Tilt Neck Adjustment system.

The neck joins the body at the 17th fret on the bass side, 20th on the treble, so access to the 21st fret is not a problem, designed to perfection of course!

The body is a proper slab of wood, flat on top and back, no chamfering to make anything more comfortable and minimal rounding off of the edges. The back has 6 holes protected by metal O's for the string thru body stringing.

The front looks amazing though, a large 3 ply black-white-black scratchplate covering the upper bout from the 3 way selector switch, under the strings between the pickups and all the way down the lower bout covering all 4 control knobs, these are proper retro looking hatbox types black with small silver labels on top saying tone and volume.

This layout was heavily influenced by Gibson of course!

The bridge is that very familiar vintage 'ashtray' style, a Chrome plate with sides bent up. 3 Chrome saddles keep the strings in place and the bridge pickup is fitted in the middle on a slant, nearer the neck on the bass side.

And finally, the neck pickup, a Chrome plated humbucker with Fenders beautiful script logo engraved and 6 adjustable chrome polepieces.

This is just an uber-cool guitar, very indie of course, and just ideal for all sorts of power pop and rock 'n' roll duties. The bridge pickup is very bright, clean and clear, brilliant for jangle, the neck pickup much more dark and moody, more for blues and rock, great on your overdrive channel.

The Fender Telecaster '72 Custom is just an amazing guitar, very versatile, ultra hip and great fun to play.
