A unique, very limited edition run Stratocaster from Fender.
With 2 Chrome covered humbuckers and a Tele 'lipstick' pickup in between, a satin Charcoal paint job, matching body and headstock, 3 ply black scratchplate and some amazing sounds on offer, this will be a collectors item in years to come.
This FSR (factory single run) model is based on the Mexican Standard Stratocaster. So to start we have that familiar headstock with Fenders spaghetti logo in gold, and STRATOCASTER in black block letters. The front face, unusually for Fender, matches the body in that cool, satin finish.
The back of the headstock is satin natural, with the serial number and country of manufacture (Mexico), and a row of 6 Chrome, sealed, die-cast machine heads.
The neck is straight off of a Standard Strat, so the modern C shape, with a Rosewood fingerboard, 9.5" radius and large white dot markers.
The neck is bolted to body, and the neck plate on the back is plain. The back of the body is also very plain, the usual ribcage chamfering making a very comfortable playing guitar. No rear access plate on this model, (no tremolo bridge to adjust), just 6 ferules for the string thru body, like on a Telecaster.
The front of the body is where all of the interesting stuff is though.
The body is finished in a satin 'Flat Charcoal', you kind of know who Fender are aiming this Stratocaster at, and a 3 ply black-white-black scratchplate, all giving a moody, dark look.
But it's the pickups which made you go oooh, 2 Chrome plated humbuckers, and in the middle, a Tele neck lipstick pickup, and to control it all, a 5 way selector switch. As an added bonus, Fender have put in a 'Passing Lane' switch, when this is pressed, the entire tone and selector switching circuits are bypassed, going straight into the bridge humbucker.
What does it sound like?
It sounds very like a Strat! On the clean channel, all of the pickups are very bright and jangly, the neck a little warmer as you might expect, the middle Tele pickup is really good, and bridge humbucker is very usable as well, pressing the little white bypass button adds more bite and brittleness.
On the overdrive channel, it turns into a good all round rocker, great for rhythm duties, but excellent at lead, particularly on bypass.
Fenders Blacktop series has been a very big range for them, and this is clearly a factory experiment with those in mind, as there is now an HSH Blacktop Strat. But, this model is in a satin Charcoal finish with matching headstock, it has the fixed bridge, great if you never use the tremolo anyway, and it has that Passing Lane switch, all excellent!
