Stylish and affordable, the Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollow Body features dual-coil pickups, adjustable bridge, chrome-plated die-cast tuners and Bigsby®-licensed B60 tailpiece.
Deep bodied and sounding with plenty of vibe, this is just about the most amazing guitar we've ever seen!
The large, wide headstock has a black glossy face, with the GRETSCH logo in white Abolone, and ELECTROMATIC also in silver capitals running vertically downwards towards the neck.
The rear is fairly plain, the guitars serial number in gold print along with the country of manufacture, Korea in this case. There are 2 rows of 3-a-side open geared Chrome machine heads, ornately finished with small buttons for accurate tuning.
The easy playing Maple neck feels quite slim, almost flat at the lower frets. It has a gloss natural finish to the back, and we have cream binding protecting the edges of the Rosewood fingerboard.
Fretwork on the Gretsch G5120 is excellent, they're quite high and well rounded, beautifully finished. The board itself is dark with a very tight grain and polished to a high standard. Notice the 'Neo Classic Thumbnail' position inlays, very smart.
Nut width is 43mm, action as supplied from the factory is about 2mm at the 12th fret, and string spacing at the bridge is 53mm, for the pickers out there.
The neck joins the Maple body of the G5120 at the 14th fret on the bass side, and 18th on the treble side, the traditional style cutaway gives access to the 20th fret only. The neck joint itself is set of course, and the heel is very small and unobtrusive.
Nearby here we have a large, screw style strap hook, the lower that is part of the tailpiece is the same, no chance of your strap falling off of that!
All the hardware is Chrome, so we have a 3 way toggle selector switch on the upper bout, and down on the lower side a master tone, and volumes for each individual pickup. The control near the cutaway is the master volume. All of the knobs are round Chrome style, with knurled edges and the G for Gretsch logo cast into the top. Very smart again.
We have a large silver scratchplate, again with the Gretsch logo, this time in black, a Tune-o-Matic style bridge sitting on a Rosewood block and, of course, the superb Bigsby B60 Vibrato tailpiece!
This has that familiar black and Chrome plate, with the Bigsby logo, and a long flat tremolo arm that rolls the strings around the roller, stretching and pulling to great effect.
The body is large and deep, 72mm deep in fact all around, across the lower bout it is about 390mm at its widest. Here finished in a traditional thru orange, with the beautiful swirly Maple grain showing through.
The G5120's pickups are their familiar Dual-Coil humbuckers, large Chrome plates with 2 rows of polepieces in amongst the black tape.
Played acoustically the G5120 sounds woody and mellow, plenty of volume for acoustic strumming with pleasing jazzy tones.
Plugged in, the Dual-Core pickups prove to be very powerful, picking up just about everything you do! Loads of clarity, brittleness and chime - perfect for your clean and mildly distorted channels. Not really designed for heavier stuff though, as you might imagine.
In all, a very good value proper Gretsch electric guitar. If you can't afford the real deal US made ones, the Electromatics are perfectly good enough, with all the vibe and character, for a quarter of the price.
Great sounds, lovely to play and character in abundance.
