NEW! NEW! NEW!
The Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet model takes on a new voice and identity, with a chambered Mahogany body and arched Maple top that resonate true to “That Great Gretsch Sound”, dual “Black Top” FilterTron pickups and a Bigsby tremolo tailpiece.
Other classic features include Rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and “hump block” inlays, three-position pickup toggle switch, “G” arrow knobs, white pearloid Gretsch-logo pickguard and threaded/knurled strap buttons.
The Pro Jet has a slim, sleek looking headstock, gently tapering inwards at it's waist. We have a blocky gold Gretsch logo at the top and ELECTROMATIC written vertically down through the middle of the tuning posts.
The back of the headstock is plain gloss black, with the country of manufacture and serial number in gold, and 2 rows of vintage style, Chrome enclosed machine heads, that have small buttons for tuning.
The Maple neck also has a gloss black finish, the neck feels like a pretty modern C shape, so should be good for most players. The Rosewood fingerboard is fully bound in cream plastic, and we have large pearloid 'hump-block' inlays, a traditional Gretsch feature.
The 22 medium jumbo frets are all finished to a high standard, and the board itself plays very nicely. Well set up by the factory, we have an action of 2-3mm cross the board at the 12th fret.
The set Maple neck joins the Mahogany body at the 16th fret on the bass side and 19th on the treble, so no upper fret access problems here.
The body is bound to the front in cream plastic, the back is plain black, apart from 3 access plates to get to the electrics.
The front of this model is finished in a none more black gloss.
So, we have an array of controls, all retro looking Chrome Die-Cast affairs. A 3 way pickup selector, the the top rotary up near the scratchplate, this is the master volume. The the 2 rotaries at the bottom of the scratchplate, they're individual volumes for the 2 pickups, then lastly a master tone control.
The body is chambered, so the guitar itself is probably not as heavy as you might imagine, this also leads to a very hollow, loud and woody tone when played acoustically.
Onto the pickups, a pair of Gretsch 'Blacktop' FilterTrons. Beautiful to look at, Chrome plates enclosing it all, black tape across the top and 12 polepieces (all adjustable if you wish) poking out of the top.
The scratchplate is white pearloid plastic, very traditional looking, and the bridge is a Bigsby licensed tremolo, a beauty with a long, flat wide arm and feather lite touch.
Plugged in the guitar is responsive and powerful, the pickups are bright and vibrant, on your clean channel, expect bright highs and ringing mids from the bridge pickup, the neck is, as expected, a little warmer and more mellow.
On your lead channel, both pickups perform admirably, plenty of drive, sustain and screaming on offer for everything from rock, blues, country, even a little metal maybe.
A beautiful guitar, very traditional 60's styling perhaps, but with some very 21st century appointments. Excellent pickups, great playability and plenty of vibe make this a definite contender for your new sub £500 single cut.
