Washburn make some of the worlds most popular guitars and have a very good reputation for making affordable instruments of impressive quality.
The Washburn HB35 is a lovely semi acoustic guitar, in the 335 style, featuring a Maple body and neck, gold hardware and beautiful decorations.
The headstock is quite fat, black to the front with an Abolone diamond motiff and Washburn logo. The rear of the headstock is plain stained and varnished Maple with a nice grain. The machine heads are Grovers in gold, and are pretty much the best you can get.
The neck feels fairly slim on this model, again stained and varnished to the back, with a fully bound Rosewood fingerboard. The binding is 5 ply cream and black, and just comes up over the edge of the fingerboard giving a very smart finish. The 22 fret fingerboard itself has (lots of) large Abolone split block inlays that get smaller all the way down the neck, giving a real rock 'n' roll and a very really sets this model out from the crowd. The fretwork is very nicely finished and the Rosewood is really nice to play on.
The neck joins the body at the 19th fret, and there is a gold straphook at the back of the heel joint. The 5 ply binding continues around the edge of the front and back of the guitar, and the 2 'f' holes on the front also have plain cream binding to protect the edges.
The back and sides are woodstained in a gorgeoud deep Wine Red and heavily varnished, showing of a lovely grain to the Maple body. The top also has a flamed Maple cap giving a superb light and dark stripe appearance. The HB35 includes a solid maple block in the center of the body, reducing susceptibility to feedback and making it perfect for rock and blues. Also featuring on the front are a 5 ply black pickguard, 4 amber control knobs and a 3 way toggle switch on the upper bout.
The Washburn pickups, tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece are all gold, giving a very smart look to this instrument.
Unplugged, the guitar has that familiar woody tone associated with semi acoustic guitars, with lots of volume and character. On a clean channel, the Washburn pickups are impressive. The neck pickup has lots of warmth and depth, whilst the bridge pickup is very bright and lively. On a dirty channel, the HB35 shows its versatility, with plenty of grunt, sustain and clarity to play pretty much any style of music.
A great looking Semi from Washburn which offers great value, gold hardware and plenty of posh adornments!
