The EC401 is a top quality LP style guitar from ESP, in their hugely popular far eastern made Ltd range.
This model is packed with great features and equipment, Grover tuners, Sermour Duncan pickups, a flame Maple cap and Earvana compensated nut to name just a few.
The headstock of the ESP Ltd EC-401 is small and curvy, slightly offset, longer on the treble side, with a gloss black face. The front is bound in cream plastic, and has the Ltd logo in shiny Abalone and a black, 3 ply truss rod cover.
The rear of the headstock is a dark, ruby red, glossy Mahogany. Here we have the guitars serial number, the ESP logo and country of origin in silver print.
The strings pass over a black graphite fully compensated top nut, with each string sitting in a slightly different sized groove. ESP was the first major guitar manufacturer to feature the Earvana compensated nut on some of its most popular models.
By compensating each string?s length at the nut (similar to how a bridge saddle is compensated for intonation) you will notice much more accurate intonation across the fretboard, especially towards the open chording area, where this problem is most common.
The Mahogany neck has the same glossy finish, it's very slim up at the headstock end, a U shape ,which tapers gently to a D towards the upper frets. A very fast neck, designed for soloists, shredders and people who like a really slim neck.
The Rosewood fingerboard in bound in cream plastic, and it has large white Abolone wavey shaped inlays, kind of like a homage to Gibsons crown inlays with a bit more attitude.
The 22 extra jumbo frets are superbly finished, no rough edges and the Rosewood itself it very nicely polished up, it all feels very fast and slippery, great for heavy bending and runs up and down the neck. Well set up as well by the factory, action at the 12th fret is between 2-3mm across the strings.
The neck joins the Mahogany body at the 16th fret on the bass side, 19th on the treble side, and the cutaway here makes for good access to the top frets. The point here is a bit sharper than you'd find on a standard LP, again a bit of ESP's rock design coming out.
The back of the body is unbound, all in that glossy dark red colour, with a round access plate for the pickup selector switch and a triangular one for access to the tone and volume controls.
The guitar itself is pretty heavy, a good solid lump, and this makes for an excellent sounding instrument with amazing resonance and sustain, played acoustically it is already loud!
To the front of the body and this model in Cherry Sunburst has a flame Maple cap displaying a beautiful grain, fully bound in cream plastic. The 3 Chrome control knobs are recessed slightly into the body, here we have a master tone, and separate volumes for each pickup.
The stop tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge are Chrome finished, and the pair of Seymour Duncans also have chrome plates, and matching cream surrounds, giving that familiar LP look.
The EC401 has a pair of excellent quality Seymour Duncan pickups. The JB at the bridge position has loads of brightness and clarity, whilst the '59 at the neck is somewhat more moody and bassy.
On the clean channel, both pickups are excellent for rhythm work, jingle jangle and funky grooves cutting right through, whilst on the dirty channel, the JB is great for piercing lead work, the '59 amazing on rock and metal rhythm work.
A very good all round guitar, plenty of vibe and looks to die for, excellent pickups and hardware, good for pretty much any musical style. East and fun to play, a top quality LP copy from ESP, really good value.
