Classic rock styling on show here from ESP guitars, the MH103 features a reverse headstock, double locking tremolo system, bolt-on Maple neck and HSS pickup configuration - all finished in an ultra-cool see thru black, with a flame Maple top.
The headstock is instantly recognisable, a reverse style, so the machine heads are on the underside. The front is finished in a flame Maple veneer, thru black, and you'll notice the flamey woodgrain.
The front has the ESP block letters logo in gold and silver, a black pointed truss rod cover and a long black Nickel string tree that covers all 6 strings.
The back of the headstock is plain satin Maple, with the ESP logo, serial number and country of manufacture printed, and 6 in line black Nickel ESP branded machine heads.
The strings pass under the black Nickel locking top nut, which has a width of 43mm. The very smooth satin finished Maple neck is ESP's extra thin shape, with a flat back - very comfortable for playing fast rhythm work.
The fingerboard is Maple, also with a satin finish. There are 24 extra jumbo frets sitting fairly high on the board. Small black dots mark the usual positions, with ESP's traditional Abalone 12th fret block marker displaying the guitars model number.
It's a very playable guitar, the neck is fast and easy going and fretwork is finished to a high standard. It's also been well set-up by the factory, action as supplied is about 2mm across the board at the 12th fret.
The neck is bolted to the Basswood body, held in place by a black Nickel ESP branded neck plate and 4 bolts. The neck joins at the 18th fret on the bass side and 22nd on the treble, the deep cutaway here giving access to all 24 frets.
The back of the body has a large rib-cage chamfer for an easier playing position, and large black plastic plated covering the back of the tremolo bridge and controls.
The flat front has this beautiful flame Maple top, more of the swirly wood grain showing through the black wood stain. On the lower bout you have the 2 black Nickel controls, master volume and tone, and a 5-way pickup selector switch.
The floating bridge is a proper Floyd Rose Special, again finished in cool black Nickel, with a long matching tremolo arm.
The 3 pickups are ESP branded, finished in black, a double coil at the bridge and single coils for the middle and neck - classic 80's rock configuration.
They give an excellent tonal range as well, plenty of brightness on the clean channel for jingle jangle, funky rhythms and chordal work, whilst on the dirty channel, de-tune metal riffs have loads of impact, solo work screams with massive sustain and a cutting edge.
A very nice low priced double cutaway rock guitar, the Maple neck is a beauty, pickups are plenty hot enough and ESP's brilliant styling - if you're after an affordable, versatile and great looking axe, definitely consider the ESP Ltd M-103FM.
