With a voice that is classic, eminently recordable and gig ready, the all new PRS SE 245 is perfect for traditional single-cutaway players.
The 24.5" scale length makes this instrument instantly comfortable to players who grew up using short scale guitars.
Volume and tone controls for each pickup, a 3-way toggle and bird inlays are all standard appointments.
Without a doubt, this new SE model from Paul Reed Smith is THE best Single Cut guitar without a G on the headstock.
We start with a beautifully shaped headstock, the same design that PRS have used for years, a gloss black finish to the front and back, the front has a large truss rod cover with PRS in silver capitals, and we have 'SE 245' also in silver script.
The PRS SE 245 has a 'wide fat' neck, broadly a C shape, with a nut width of 43mm, and a gloss finish to the back. The Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, with excellent fretwork and finishing, and, best of all, PRS's now trademark bird inlays, until recently reserved for the most expensive of PRS's American made guitars, now featuring on the SE range as well.
The Mahogany neck joins the Mahogany body at the 16th fret on the treble side and the 20th on the treble, the cutaway here has a dose of extra chamfering allowing excellent access to all 22 frets.
The back of the 245's body is pretty flat and plain, only a bit of ribcage chamfering and 2 black plastic electrics access plates. This gloss black model has Maple binding around the top, apart from that, all is black!
We have a traditional layout of controls and pickups, so a 3 way selector switch on the upper bout, and a dark amber tone and volume control for each pickup.
The bridge is PRS's usual wrap around style combined bridge and tailpiece, all beautifully set up by the excellent Korean factory.
The pickups themselves are open coil 'zebra' styles, specially designed by PRS for this SE 245, and this is instanly clear when you first plug the 245 in. Both pickups offer so much clarity and depth of tone, this is definately not just a looker, this guitar plays and sounds wonderful.
The controls are different to how you might expect, but they could be easily swapped around if you're used to a certain set up. The bridge pickup has plenty a snap and a bright punch, giving plenty of jange on the clean channel, and plenty of brittleness on the lead for piercing solo work.
The neck pickup has more of the bass you;d expect, and is an excellent drive channel rhythm player, great for all rock and blues situations, and between the 2 pickups, the 245 will prove to be a very versatile instrument.
I'll say it again - Without a doubt, this new SE 245 model from Paul Reed Smith is THE best Single Cut guitar without a G on the headstock.
