Best known as the guitarist in Cradle of Filth, Paul Allender has had his own PRS Custom guitar for many years, but now they have introduced a slightly more affordable version in their SE range.
With a beautiful quilted Maple top in purple burst, chrome hardware, a tremolo system and neck adorned with Bats, this is just about the best SE guitar out there as well, and competition here is pretty high!
The black headstock is PRS's usual shape, with a gently curving, tapered style. SE and Paul Allender are written on the front in silver. The rear has the guitars serial number, and 2 rows of 3-a-side chrome machine heads, branded PRS.
The Maple neck on these PRS models are all superb, nice and slim with a fast playing action. The rear of the Paul Allender is gloss black, and the Ebony fingerboard is unbound.
This provides the major talking point of this guitar of course, 7 flying bats in various poses, in finely detailed white Abalone. This is really done to a very high standard, very impressive stuff from PRS's Korean factory.
All PRS guitars are fully set up in the UK prior to dispatch by their own Luthiers, giving us an action of about 3mm on the treble side and 2mm on the bass side at the 12th fret. Nut width is 43mm and string spacing at the bridge is 52mm.
The set neck joins the Mahogany body at the 22nd fret on both sides, the lower cutaway have extra chamfering to give easy access to all 24 frets.
The body is plain black gloss on the back, with an unbound Flamed Maple top, in a deep red burst that fades in from black on the outside edges. Very eyecatching as well as giving that extra body and sustain that Maple is well know for.
The pickups are a pair of EMG's, high output, great for high gain situations as you'd expect. Plenty of rock tones of offer on your drive channel, this guitar is great for driving rhythm work, screaming solo's, the lot.
PRS guitars are also well known for their characterful tones as well, and this model doesn't disappoint there either. On your clean channel, sweet, clear tones are available as well, a great all rounder.
The Paul Allender has a PRS designed tremolo system fitted, in chrome, with a slim chrome tremolo arm. Action is very light, but can of course be adjusted to suit your style, and being of top quality, no tuning problems here.
All controlled by straight forward master volume and tone controls, with Gibson-esque black speed knobs and a 3 way pickup selector, this guitar is just built to rock!
A top quality, great looking, a wonderful playing metaller from PRS. Includes a decent PRS padded gig-bag as well.
