The Paul Reed Smith ?Special Edition? Singlecut features a diversion from the traditional PRS body shape, with just a single cutaway, bevelled to allow more reach of the upper frets. The top of the body is a Maple cap, with a flame Maple veneer for stunning looks and a crisp tone. PRS designed open coil humbucker pickups in treble and bass position provide a versatile range of sounds, with a rich depth of tone characteristic of the Mahogany body. The hardware is designed by PRS, including sealed chrome tuners and wrap around stoptail bridge. The single cutaway guitar is available in a Tobacco Sunburst finish, with the flame Maple veneer shining through.
A Maple binding runs around the front of the body, separating the flamed Maple front finish with the deep coloured, glossy back and sides. The neck has a ?wide fat? profile giving it a very sturdy feel, and the glossy lacquer seals in the fretboard and fret ends for a seamless finish. The 25? scale gives you more room for exploring more dynamic fingering techniques, which in conjunction with the superior Rosewood fingerboard make this guitar such a pleasure to play. The strings slip and slide against the frets with no friction at all thanks to immaculate polishing, and this smooth action translates into crystal clear tone and incredible sustain. Set into the finely grained Rosewood are a beautiful set of blue Abalone ?moons?, each containing a crescent that shimmers in the light, with customary double inlay at fret 12.
The neck heel joins the upper body shoulder at the 16th fret, adding rigidity to the neck structure, and helping to transfer tone through to the bulk of the Mahogany body. On the other side the upper frets are exposed by the deeply set lower cutaway for easy access. A deep scallop is carved into this lower horn, which acts to cradle the fretting hand of those who spend like to get carried away up the fretboard!
At the headstock the chrome tuners are arranged into a three a side formation, getting narrower towards the angular apex. Between these lie the Special Edition ?Singlecut? logo, the truss rod cover is labelled with PRS. Around the back each machine head is PRS branded on the sealed gear mechanism, and the large turning posts give you accurate control over string tension. Tuning stability is also enhanced by the accurately cut top nut, with deep grooves to maintain perfect string height above the fretboard.
The SE Singlecut is fitted with open coil PRS designed humbuckers, set in cream surrounds, and the pickup selector knob is also cream. The volume and tone controls are styled to match the finish of the guitar, golden resin for this Sunburst model.
The sound an electric guitar makes unplugged is a good indicator of its tonal integrity, and the PRS SE Singlecut performs well at this test. The combination of a Mahogany body and Maple cap provide a thick and full bodied tone, with a well defined high end. The wrap around bridge enhances this effect by directly transferring the string vibration through the body of the guitar. The neck pickup is perfect for sucking up all of the Mahogany body tone for a very well presented clean sound. This pickup also works well in conjunction with the tone control, which can be rolled back for more of an ambient sound. This humbucker retains definition as you increase the distortion for a dirty, bluesy sound that would make any lead guitarist feel right at home.
Flick over to the bridge pickup and the treble tones sharpen up for tighter rhythm playing. On clean amp settings this gives plenty of bite for rock inclined rhythms and punchy licks. Crank up the distortion and this pickup responds accordingly with minimal hum and a lively growling presence. Again there?s a lot of scope for fine tuning your sound with the volume and tone controls to get a diverse range of sounds to play with. With the pickup selector in mid position you get the colour of the neck pickup with the crunch of the bridge for a great all round sound.
This guitar looks fantastic, and sounds just as good, with unbeatable playability the PRS Singlecut is a guitar fit for the professional musician. The PRS Special Edition series of electric guitars offers the exceptional quality of Paul Reed Smith at a much more accessible price.
The guitar is supplied with a thickly padded PRS gig bag. This premium guitar case has heavy-duty zips with loops for use with a padlock, a large front pocket and backpack style straps. The front pocket is embroidered with a large PRS SE logo showing off its contents.
