If you're after a Telecaster, and who isn't nowadays, and you're on a budget, but want something decent, then the Squier Standard Telecaster is what you want.
All the Fender twang, styling, materials and playability, but at a bargain basement price, a real bargain.
The Maple headstock is of their instantly recognisable slim style, only enough room for the Squier logo in gold, and TELECASTER in black capital letters. Finished in satin natural to the front and rear, with 6-in-line Chrome die-cast tuners, and 2 string trees on the front, increasing tension to the 4 treble strings.
The neck also has a satin natural finish, in Maple, the rear has a dark line of Rosewood running the entire length where the truss rod has been inserted. The neck feels moderately chunky, a bit of a C profile to my hands.
The Rosewood fingerboard is unbound, and the Indonesian factory has done a very good finishing it all off. The fretwork is very good, and the board itself is good and smooth. Large white dots mark the usual fretboard positions.
The neck is bolted onto the Agathis body, the joint itself has a Chrome square plate with Squiers logo nicely engraved. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side, and 21st on the bass, so excellent access to the upper register here.
The body itself is heavy, quite a large slab of dense wood, here finished in a metallic Black.
The back has the same finish, and is pretty much plain apart from the 6 holes where the string pass through.
The front of this model has a contrasting white scratchplate. This covers a large area, as Fenders always do of course, from underneath the strings, inbetween the 2 pickups and right over the lower bout. It's a classic style that looks as cool today as ever.
Below the scratchplate we have the long, Chrome plate that goes behind the control knobs, a 3 way selector switch, single volume and single tone. These are both very chunky lumps of Chrome plated metal, with a rough, grippy surface.
The bridge is a large, square Chrome plate, very shiny, with 6 die-cast Chrome saddles, these have a satin finish to them and they look and feel of very high quality, always one of the first things I look at on a guitar.
Telecasters, Standard ones anyway, come with 2 single coil pickups. The neck is a 'lipstick' style Alnico single coil, this gives lovely warm tones, great for rhythm work, loads of clarity and volume.
The bridge pickup is a more traditional looking, Alnico magnetic open coil single pickup. This is a fair bit brighter, good for solo work, country or raasping overdriven noise!
A great value budget electric guitar, one of the classics of course, but this version is well up to the job. The pickups are very impressive, build quality and components are excellent, and with this much vibe, everyone should want one.
You will struggle to get a better playing or sounding guitar at this price point than this Squier Telecaster.
