Gretsch Roots Boxcar Resonator, the miracle of volume!

This little half resonator half Mahogany is the best of both worlds, from a gorgeous rich Mahogany acoustic to the loud, tinny resonator. This one sits dead in the middle! The two F-hole cuts are an attractive feature and add that resonant, bright tone of this Gretsch G9200 Resonator. With a Gretsch Ampli-Sonic design this little Boxcar can kick out the volume which is great for playing in those open tunings with a slide.

The Mahogany 'Long Body' design means this feels like a classic 1930s style resonator and plays extremely well. It's a really comfortable design, and it's not that heavy! The satin finished neck is also made from Mahogany and has the old-school soft 'V' profile, meaning it's a bit pointy at the back. It's quite a chunky, weird feel at first but after a few minutes it feels great and you get used to the classic, authentic feel.

The fingerboard is made from Rosewood and holds 19 medium jumbo frets which are marked by aged white pearloid dot inlays. The factory set action means the strings sit at around 4mm at the 12th fret across all 6 strings, perfect for slide. The nut width is 44.5mm.

This cool, retro looking acoustic resonator guitar from the Gretsch 'Roots Collection' has a slim, slightly curvy headstock, the front looks amazing, with a creamy mother of pearl face and Gretsch in black letters written downwards along the length.

The back of the head is fairly plain, speckled Mahogany, with 2 rows of open geared Grover 'Sta-tite' machine heads, in Chrome, with small black plastic buttons.

The G9120's neck joins the Mahogany body at the 12th fret on both sides. The body has an all over satin finish with no binding to the front or back.

The front has 2 'f' holes on wither side of the neck, and below is the large, round, shiny resonator cone, which has 4 flower motifs pointing inwards towards the middle. Looking inside, you can see the cast and spun 99% pure aluminium cone.

The bridge is Maple with Ebony tips, and the Phosphor Bronze strings run on to a Chrome trapeze style tailpiece that is secured on the underside. Distance between the strings (E-e) at the bridge is 55mm making it nice and wide for use with finger picks as well as just your fingers or a plectrum.

The guitar is finished with a single, nice wooden strap button on the underside.

To play, the Gretsch G9120 Resonator is bright and vibrant, with loads of sustain that seems to ring on forever. The neck is easy playing, it's all loads of fun to play.

A fair bit louder than a regular acoustic, the Roots Series Boxcar is a good entry to intermediate level resonator, from a very well known brand that has historically been at the forefront of the folk scene.

Overall it's a great 'hybrid' resonator that sits inbetween a wooden and metal acoustic. The mix of the two sounds with the brilliant 99% pure Aluminum cone just make for a unique but still authentic tone that's great with any open tuning or just in standard. Great value, great guitar. Why not come into Guitarbitz Guitar Shop and give one a strum?

5The best resonator bargain around?

Bought this having seen the Gretsch YouTube clip: I sometimes play slide guitar, but I also like the sound of finger picked resonators. Unbelievable guitar for the money: notes and chords boom out of this little beauty and, unless you dig in with a really thick pick or use metal finger picks, it is not obvious that it is a resonator, just a very responsive and warm acoustic, especially if played closer to neck than bridge. This must also be the lightest resonator you can buy: the aluminium cone means a significant weight saving. Due to spinal damage in my neck, following a car accident, I have really struggled to get back to acoustic guitars, but I played this for hours, straight out of the box, unheard of for me! If you want the typical resonator sound, spend a great deal more, risk a hernia and aim for a centimetre action; if you want a guitar whose sound belies the laminate construction and price tag, get this beauty as soon as you can. As ever, buying from Guitarbitz guarantees a well set up guitar free of problems... What are you waiting for?
